I put both positions as a higher priority to address than a 2nd pairing D.
I could see the 2nd line center, but a 2nd pairing defense is more important than the winger depth.

There's no need to spend any more assets and cap space on wingers. Yes we lost 2 stud wingers and replaced them with 1 but reconstructing the team with better D (done with Weegar) and stronger up the middle is a much better blueprint for success than having 2 stud, expensive wingers anyways.

The true need is a center to play behind Lindholm. Ideally would be more of a playmaker than scorer as all our wingers are more finishers than play makers with the exception of Huberdeau.

With the rest of the roster as currently constructed, the Flames are a legit Cup contender the day Backlund is legitimately the #3C and the only way that happens is adding a top 6 C, not winger.
I don't necessarily disagree with you but who out of that group is a surefire top 6 winger?

Huberdeau - yes
Mangiapane - yes
Toffoli - yes
Coleman - not really
Dube - no
Pelletier - unproven
Coronato - year(s) away

If you want to make the argument for Pelletier in the top 9, can we not do the same for Ruzicka? I know C is the harder position but even Sutter said he doesn't like playing him in a 4th line role.

Why isn't Raz subject to the same criticism? It's not like he was any better in the playoffs. That pair, like the rest of the D, was completely overwhelmed.

Dube - 3rd/4th liner, until he develops some consistency in his game.
Coleman - 3rd liner.
Pelletier - hasn't even made the NHL. 3rd/4th liner.
Coronato - isn't even signed yet, hasn't played a game of pro.

A hockey team needs at least eight wingers and you list five with NHL experience and two others with none. Of those, we have two that are bona fide top six wingers, making us two short. Yes, we need another winger. Yes, we need another center, but we need another winger really badly, preferably someone that can play on the top line.

Mangiapane was 40th amongst wingers in total points and 14th in goals scored by wingers, I think you can make a decent argument in a league that requires 64 wingers to play on first lines that he is a first line winger. I do agree that they need one more top 6 winger but I think that is more because they only have one true second line winger in the form of Toffoli. If they get another 1st line winger all the better.

I’d say based on general standards we have

1st liners - Huberdeau, Lindholm
2nd liners - Mangiapane, Toffoli
3rd liners - Backlund, Coleman, Dube, Monahan
4th liners - Lucic, Lewis, Rooney

Adding a forward is definitely where they need to add, and I’d say center over winger in terms of importance for sure. But a top 6 winger is still something we do kind of need.

That’s not a strong forward group. But given you could probably consider all of Weegar, Tanev, Andersson and Hanifin as top pairing dmen and Kylington and Zadorov as lower end 2nd pairing guys, along with an elite starter and a decent backup, the team should be good with a top 6 forward added, center or winger.

I'd say right now it'll be Mangiapane and/or Toffoli getting the bulk of the reps with Huberdeau, and he has the ability elevate either one of them to first line production. I could easily see Mang potting 40+ on Hubys line

It's funny that people are saying Toffoli is a second-liner and Coleman is a third-liner when I think I'd rather have Coleman on my team by pretty much every measure other than finishing ability.

I think if they sign a centre (Kadri) then Toffoli gets those top line minutes. If they don't, they use their cap space and a pick to find a 1RW.

Finishing ability is a pretty important factor when your line is counted on for scoring. Love Coleman, but he struggles to finish which is why he's best served playing on the third line.

For sure ... but I also don't think we can discount how massive a part of the Backlund/Mangiapane/Coleman line he was this past year. Absolutely dominant two-way unit, one that I'd like to see stick together.

A really strong FA signing by the GM.

Agreed. Coleman was a great signing because we needed a player like him in the lineup. I don't think that changes where he should shake out.

Coleman played top 6 minutes on a team that won back to back cups…safe to say he’s good enough to play top 6.

He was 5th among Tampa Forwards in 5v5 TOI in the 20-21 regular season, and across the two cup winning playoffs he was 6th in TOI per game as well (13:46).

Maybe he’s not the ideal scoring line winger but he’s been a top 6 forward on cup winning teams.

Also don’t think it should be understated how Snake Bit he was last year.

His 197 shots at 5v5 were 9th in the entire NHL, his individual expected goals at 5v5 were 14th in the NHL.

He just shot 7.61% which is low for his career

Default 2022/2023 Trade Speculation and Rumours

Outside of Kadri or Stastny, what 2nd/3rd line centermen are currently available? Either through FA signing or through trade (i.e. players that have been rumoured to be available for trade).

^ I think Montreal would part with Dvorak but considering they spent a 1st on him from the Kotkaniemi ordeal they'll want at least that back.

Not sure if I’d be too eager to spend large assets like a first round pick on Dvorak at this point. I was sort of intrigued by Dvorak when Tkachuk was here since they played so well in junior together but I’m not as interested now.

I’m not confident Monahan will ever recover. Some think he might but I’m not one of them. Whether you think he will or not he no question was an anchor last season to whatever line he played on.

If we get a true #2 center the positive impact that player will have on our wingers we will find out quickly that this team is fine on the wing

You want to be a true contender we need a center

PLD (though he strictly wants the Habs and is a problem child).

I suppose Mark Scheifele and Jonathan Toews might be available but the cost to acquire Scheifele may be high and I’m not sure if there is any appetite to take on Toews. Not to mention the NTC that could restrict any moves.
