Dammit you made me curious...
Valimaki 3 picks before Norris then Thomas, ouch.
Also, unrelated to a #1C, but noticed it while looking at this... surprised Batherson was a 4th round pick that year, Flames 2nd pick that year was in the 4th round (Ruzicka), 12 picks before Batherson.
Stupid hindsight.

Valimaki wasn't a reach at 16th. It's just the way it goes in the draft. The further you get out of the top 5 picks the harder it gets to identify what prospects will make the best pros.

Michael Stone has the best life in the NHL.
He plays 10-20 games a year for his home town team.
Half the time people forget he’s even on the roster.
When he does play, everyone goes “why doesn’t he play more?”
He once got bought out and re-signed by the team in the same off season, resulting in him getting more money right away for doing less work.
He could easily be making $2m somewhere.
Instead, he takes his $700k or $800k and goes home to his family without a care in the world.
He’s 32. He could do this for another 5-6 years.
What a beauty.

Nope, he was a good pick at the time.
That is the way the draft goes sometimes, especially for the Flames when it comes to #1C's

Easy to say this now but... highly touted defenseman from Calgary, the Flames should have put together a package to move up to the 2 or 3 spot and snag Makar.

or...
With Tanev because then we'd be pairing the guy who's the best zone defender (Tanev) with the guy who (by all accounts) is amazing in transition.
Lot's of options. If we have to move Hanifin I'd rather we do it next offseason to make room for the (fingers-crossed) Huberdeau and Weegar extensions and find some way to move out Monahan or Lucics cap to make any room we need for present additions. The D looks amazing for this season... let's keep it that way.
|
I think we'll end up with:
Hanifin - Andersson
Zadarov - Weegar
Valimaki - Tanev
Kylington
With our 7th defenceman actually getting in meaningful games. With Vali/Kylingting cycling in and out.
...if we don't trade someone, that is.
5v5 minutes get distributed equally, and our better defencemen get more minutes on special teams.

Yes, easy to say now. Way too easy.
We can play this game all day. Hindsight drafting is so easy.
I assume if I look at the draft thread there is a post by you suggesting such a thing, including paying a huge amount of draft capital to move up so far?

No need to get testy. I'm just saying that since Makar is a home town kid, and he was highly touted going into that draft, it would have been a good idea to trade a package of assets to move up and get him.
One CPer nailed it... https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...05#post6264605

That CPer probably didn't think they had to move up to 4 to get him at the time...lots of 7-10 projections for Makar
those draft threads sure don't age well lol, some bad takes
but goes to show how easy things are with hindsight

7 was the lowest projection I saw, and a lot had him going higher.
When you're targeting a specific player, you have to get a spot 2-3 spots higher than you think he will go, or you risk not getting him.

It would have also been near impossible to trade up to get that pick though.

Moving up into the top 4 from 16 would have cost a TON if even possible with the assets the Flames had
In hindsight Makar is obviously #1 but at that time how do you get into the top 4 to select him?
Teams aren't giving away top 5 draft picks

Hasn't there been times when Stone is collecting his buyout money and a new contract from the Flames simultaneously?

Apparently Toews does not want to be a part of the 5-year rebuild being contemplated in Chicago. He could be an interesting an option.

From what I've heard about Weegar he might need Tanev to cover for his mistakes. Him and Zadarov are both prone to major mistakes. Having both on the same line could be a disaster.

Toews with retention for Monahan+ 3rd?

Toews only had 0.52 PPG this year and only has 1 year left on his deal - I don't think it would be too costly to acquire him.
If Chicago retained 40-50% that might be better than signing Kadri. Sutter would give him a clear role as the #2 centre on this team.

I was thinking something similar Toews (25% retention) for Monahan + Dube. Basically washes the salaries out.
