Has anyone seen the HBO show Beartown?

Eerily familiar plot. Swedish series with English subtitles about a junior hockey team in an industrial town in Sweden.

Examines all these issues.

Apparently not that far. As early as next week.
Well then, you must know more than us! I was only thinking that the wheel of justice rolls slowly but if it gets going and things happen based on the evidence than that’s great.

They'll probably settle for an undisclosed amount, part of the agreement likely will include a confidentiality clause.

But I wonder how the Canucks will handle it.

We don't even know if he's guilty or not.

Read the book, didn't know it was a show.

Settlements happen all the time irrespective if someone is guilty or not. Often the terms of the settlement will assert there is no admission of guilt or wrongdoing and a include a confidentiality clause as mentioned above.

A really good book to read that delves into sexual assault is "Missoula" by Jon Krakauer. It touches on several important topics and explains why so many people, women for the most part, are reluctant to come forward with rape/sexual assault allegations.

As TorqueDog said, that's kind of the point of civil mediation. It's one of them, at least.

Civil cases aren't about guilt or innocence per se. It is for liability for potential damages.

This is not happening. The NHLPA would file a grievance on behalf of the player and easily win. You can't terminate a contract on an accusation

No kidding. Imagine something insane happening, like a crazy Flames fan accusing McDavid just to get his contract terminated.

Well, they can’t do it now, you’ve let the cat out of the bag.

This is why Virtanen will want to settle in mediation.
The extent of discovery isn't the same as it would be in actual litigation.
If a Court ruled in favor of the accuser, that could meet the for cause requirement of contract termination.

Or maybe he doesn’t settle because he knows he can win?

We really have zero idea of what happened.

Yes, this is always a possibility.
Isn't that pretty much what happened with Kane?

From the outside the case against Kane looked far more damning, Kane had far more money and star power...so there's that!

I’m not sure why you say the case looked far more damning, when we really didn’t know what the evidence would ultimately be.

Charges were never laid because the prosecutors decided that their were huge inconsistencies in the evidence of the complainant and her mother, including outwards lies. And a lack of physical evidence.

We are left with the impression that this could have been a shakedown attempt, or simply a case where there simply wasn’t enough evidence regardless of the actual truth.

There is no way of every really knowing, other than no charges were laid, so Kane should be obviously presumed innocent. Plus there was not even enough evidence to go after a Kane civilly, where the standard of evidence is so much lower.

Friendly reminder to MRAs everywhere that not criminally guilty does not necessarily = innocent. (I have no particular opinion on this case)
