Why? That’s Pelletier’s bread and butter and I highly doubt Sutter would gift him a spot in the top 6.
Pelletier isn’t some offensive star to be. His prime is likely a defensively sound, middle six forward who can chip in some offense and play secondary PP minutes. I think Coleman is a good comparable actually.

Hubey and Weeger make about 9m combined now
I expect they’ll take up about 17m next year
Monahan and Lucic give us 12m in space next year
So that 4m would go towards Kadri.
We have 9.3m right now, but all of that will go towards Mang (6), Kylington (2.75) and a fill in/rookie.
So we can hope the cap goes up by about 3 million and be able to ice this entire line up including Kadri next year.
But we will need to either give Vader a raise/find a cheaper option, and add two replacements for Monahan and Lucic.
Tight but I can see a way it will work.

Well Kadri didn't sign with Calgary tonight because the tonight was last night and now we're on today which isn't yesterday.
It is still possible that he signs tonight or maybe tomorrow night or Friday night and when he signs it could be tonight. Unless he signs in the morning or afternoon... then he never signed tonight at all...

Sure, they have Compher, Cogliano, Helm, and Johnson coming off the books, but that frees up only $12M. MacKinnon is going to eat up $5-6M of that, which leaves $6-7M to resign your RFAs and replace the bodies you just lost. Even at league minimum that is $3M deducted from the $6-7M available. A deal with Kadri doesn't appear to be possible with Colorado unless they move out a core piece. Kadri isn't a player you do that for.

COL have been rumoured to be shopping Girard. Byram has supplanted him on the second pairing. That would free up $5 mil.

The cap isn’t going up $3 mil. Chances of it are basically 0
But there is a year of evaluation and players you could move to stay under the cap. I’m a fan of trading Kylington now to get some forward depth but if we don’t the following could be moved to get under the cap based on your scenario
Toffolli
Dube
Kylington
All would have 1 year left and make enough assuming cap goes up $1 mil.
I also don’t think Weegar and Huberdeau will make quite $17 mil
Huberdeau is Johnnys age but the contract is kicking in a year later so he will be 30 when it kicks in. I could see 8 years $9.5 mil and $6.5 mil for Weegar. If not then you might have to trade 2 guys to make room for them

So that might pay for Byram's new deal next year?

But they need to factor in Mackinnon. It all depends on his ask. He probably could get $13 mil but I could see him going for $11 mil. But until it’s inked it’s hard to assume he will leave money on the table

I’m really hoping Bingo’s post pans out, and Lucic is traded.

They have a year to figure that out. You asked how COL could free up significant cap space. Moving Girard is how. They can’t afford to pay a third-pairing guy $5 mil.

Huberdeau and Weegar cannot sign 8 year deals, they are capped at 7 years.
"... term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however, that a Club may sign a Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years if that Player was on such Club’s Reserve List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline. "

Except if you trade for someone who is still under contract
Both Weegar and Huberdeau are eligible for 8 year deals

2020 amendment:
"CBA §50.8(b)(iv) shall be amended to provide that when a Club acquires a Player who is signed through the subsequent Trade Deadline, it can immediately sign him to an 8-year SPC without waiting until the subsequent Trade Deadline if otherwise permitted to do so under Section 50.5(f)"

Since Sutter loves having a checking line to go against the other teams big guns, I would expect Coleman to be part of that line.

Didn't Sutter say that you can't line match in the NHL anymore because it's too fast now? He said at most you try to match defence to the forwards.

We painfully experienced that when he put out the 4th line and 3rd pair with a few minutes to go in the playoffs.

If we sign Kadri this team will be real good. Some will freak out over term, but who cares. By the time it's a problem the teams window will be over anyway.

Any times I've watched Pelletier is was impressed with how he disrupts passing lanes, and his hard starts and stops. I am not sure how well his offense will translate but his NHLe is 37pts, which looks about right to me.
