Originally I had this opinion cause I believed Gaudreau's decision came down to the last second, but after what transpired and his attitude afterwards I believe his mindset was definitely made up a long time ago. In that case I definitely think he showed a lack of honesty and respect. I still however lay most of the blame on BTs shoulders because the team could have still moved him.

You never know though, Gaudreaus action might have shifted the orgs mindset for the better and indirectly made BT a better GM. Lets hope so anyway.

I would’ve hoped that giving someone $43M over the last eight years might have bought them some courtesy.

Whatever. Onward.

I lived there for a while and it is probably the coolest city in Canada in many respects. But my guess is that it rates quite low on where some athletes want to live. If Montreal still had a baseball team, I bet we'd hear about it all the time.

I do think the language is part of the issue especially for American athletes.

I think the reason Guadreau didn't owe the Flames anything is illustrated by Huberdeau's quote in that organizations always do what's best for them. He had been with the team his entire career and they just traded him without even an explanation. It's all business at the end of the day and players and teams are going to do what's best for themselves first and foremost. It's why I try not to take sides in these types of things because it's that part of the game where it can be hard on teams and players when they get the short end of the stick.

Full audio from Huberdeau’s segment on TSN Overdrive: https://post.futurimedia.com/chumam/...ten-37564.html

Confirms Weegar is a “close friend” and that he no longer has the Lamborghini but he does have a Ferrari and will probably put it up for sale (!).

So he's not planning on going back to the USA anytime soon. That's good.

And here I was hoping that Huberdeau was one of those fake English Frenchman, but no...actual Frenchman.

It was a d### move for the Panthers to treat Huby & Weegar that way. Well within their rights to do so, sure, but still a d### move.

At the end of the day though I'm glad they are Flames and are going into this season with a chip on their shoulders.

These guys in the interview have given me the confidence to forget the nay-sayers here (It was too much for me to read the negativity).

I'm excited for next season when they play.

I listened to the interviews today and Weegar sounded excited to come here, Huberdeau did too but still seemed a bit shell shocked. The fact they were traded suddenly and unexpectedly could make them see things differently too.
If the Flames offer Huberdeau a long term extension along the lines he was looking for anyway, why wouldn’t he take it and secure his future? He can live wherever he wants in the off-season and when he retires.

I can’t really get to excited until they actually sign here although I think Weegar will and Huberdeau could as well.

Weegar is an intriguing case. He's a bit like Gio being a late bloomer, but he's somewhere around that 5 year deal for 4 million and change a year he signed at the end of the 2010-2011 season in terms of age and career a bit more proven for Weegar. At that time it wad 6.77% of the cap. So 5 years at 7% now is around 5.9 a year. Will be interesting to watch, most of his analytics are top notch, and those are factoring into deals now more than ever....unless your name is Darnel Nurse.

Fair. But Calgary is 2.5hr flight to Vegas, LA, San Fran, Palm Springs. 90mins to Seattle, Portland. Direct access to Hawaii comparable to Caribbean from Ontario.
I guess it’s kind of a matter of taste and preference but IMO it’s not all that different in regards to proximity to “fun” American cities.

Not everyone is Johnny Gaudreau. Most people will want to visit the city and spend some time there before committing to 7+ years of their career. Give it time.

Montreal itself is a fun city, especially if you are French Canadien. If he really wants to go home, there is nothing the Flames can do about it.
Personally I don’t think it’s a good fit and he would lose a lot of money if he chooses that.

In terms of no-trade destinations, the players all talk (as do the agents). They know which teams have locker room issues, management issues, coaching issues, etc.

I'm sure you'd see some unexpected cities on players' lists based on word-of-mouth rather than geographic factors.

This is also why I think BT came out first in his presser defending Calgary. He needed to nip any insinuation in the bud, to ensure future options remain as open as possible.
