Another point on skating - I thought we all learned in elementary that you can pass a puck way faster than you can skate. Carrying the puck is way overrated. It's a nice thing to fall back on now and then, but it's kinda like running the ball in football these days.

- average skaters; not particularly noticeable in other facets of the game, but not a liability, either

I'm shocked to see that Tanguay was only 27 when we got him for his first stint; he was age 31-33 for his second stint and that's probably stronger in my memory.
Tanguay was a great player but I think calling him a rich man's Tanguay is a bit of an undersell. Huberdeau set the all time record for points by a left wing last season and tied for 2nd in points. I don't think Tanguay was ever top 5 in NHL scoring.

Tanguay would pass on an empty net breakaway...Huberdeau has scored 30 goals twice in his career already.

Tanguay was a complimentary piece and a good player, but he was made better playing with Iginla, Sakic, etc. Huberdeau makes the players around him better.

Avalanche had an abundance of team speed.

Thinking about Tkachuk as a Flame, and the general narrative of him being a "unicorn" player, maybe I was spoiled watching and had a biased view with him, but I always sort of felt his "aggression" and "agitation" to sometimes be ill timed, and when the team needed it the most it was lacking or missing entirely, which translated into his playoff performances being somewhat uneven.

Like fighting Klingberg was just completely stupid, there has to be some general sense of awareness there. There is no point. You are a key cog on the first line, you're a 100 point guy, that is not Klingberg-also-off-ice worthy.

Anyways his between the leg routine was fun at times, groan-inducing at times, and completely unnecessary at times too.

There is a lot to love about his game, but I just don't anticipate him touching 100+ points again in his career seeing as he barely even scraped a PPG prior to this season.

Talking more playing style than tier...maybe shoulda said Uber-wealthy man's Tanguay.

FWIW Tanguay had four 29+ adjusted goal seasons - some of his best years were dead puck before the lockout. Hubes has last 4 adjusted pt years were 110 92 94 92. Tanguay had highs of 92 82 81 76. Definitely a big gap, but not huge when adjusted for eras.

Hubreadeau is 4th in points scored per 60 minutes played in the last 4 seasons. Hard to find a website that does what would be Tanguay’s best consecutive 4 seasons (02-07) but in the 2000’s he was 35th.

In 06/07 he was 17th
In 05/06 he was 14th
In 03/04 he was 2nd
In 02/03 he was 40th

In the last 4 seasons Hubredeau was

21/22 - 2nd behind Gaudreau
20/21 - 7th
19/20 - 11th
18/19 - 11th

Hubredeau is definitely more of an elite scorer than Tanguay was in his prime. A very rich man’s Tanguay is probably accurate, but he is a cut or two above Tanguay.

Where did all this "Huberdeau is a bad/average skater" come from? He can't skate like McD, but he's a good skater. Big upgrade on Tkachuk.

Yeah Huberdeau's skating was deemed a strength or at least adequate for the first day until rando came in and claimed it was worse than Tkachuk's, which is outright laughable.

That isn’t going to happen this year.

It didn’t even happen in 2006, the gold standard for offensive hockey in the modern era.
I humbly submit the 92-93 season as the gold standard, but I understand the point you’re making.

Haha you guys are something else. I know it's been a rough couple weeks for this team because guys wanted out but man, some of these responses are like I ran over your mother or something.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. But thinking that skating is Huberdeau's strenght, that's like the anti-scouting report on him lol. Couldn't be further from the truth.
