We’re all a little sensitive right now, but it’s going to be okay. It’s a big decision for these players and they don’t owe us anything (and I’m quite certain both will be locked up).
Even if they don’t sign. Someone else will.

They play hockey for money.

Did anyone ask Huberdeau about whether he waived his NTC for Calgary or did he not have Calgary on his list?

I agree we have too many defensemen. That’s why I think there’s one more move coming.

The Huberdeau contract shouldn't be a blank cheque.. One advantage over the Gaudreau deal is that Gaudreau's new money kicks in this year in a flat cap. The cap next year should hopefully start going up.

Hubby “I want to be where I’m wanted and Calgary obviously wanted me” why do I feel like that’s a subtle shot at the Panthers?

I'm under the assumption since he was surprised by being traded that Calgary wasn't on his No Trade list.

This reinforces my belief that he wants a big commitment. He wants a team to show faith that he is the guy.
If you make him an offer that shows that - he signs.

It's also a negotiation...he can't just come out and say "I want to sign so badly just give me anything"

Because it probably is.

Keep in mind that until Friday night, he was probably expecting that he was going to retire a Panther and was expecting serious contract negotiations with Zito after some preliminary discussions.

Instead he got told he was traded.

I like it, its probably top 7 in the league right now. We don't have a bonafide #1 but its super solid now. I think the D was the main problem with the Edmonton series. Huberdeau replaces Johnny. Tkachuk had a broken hand and/or was just irrelevant that series so losing him changes nothing. Better D and Markstrom not turning into a pumpkin and we should have that series this year.

I think if the Flames move a defenseman, it's Valimaki for cap reasons + both sides wanting to move on.

Depth on defense after Tanev got injured was an issue so I don't see them moving anyone in our top 6. Have Mackey as a #7 and re-sign Stone as #8 and we're set.

How is Calgary NOT on his list? If I wasn't from Calgary and I was a superstar in the NHL and I had an 8 team no trade, Calgary would be on it.

I feel like almost all players would have a list that looks like this:

1. Edmonton
2. Calgary
3. Winnipeg
4. Ottawa
5. Minnesota
6. Columbus
7. Buffalo
8. Maybe Islanders/Devils/Detroit?

Since Brad is swinging for the fences, maybe we could do Valimaki for Marner 1 for 1. Could use a natural top line RW.

Barring a 54 point season over 82 games he is going to get paid regardless. I would agree with Jiri, him saying he wants to be somewhere where they want him should be a good sign for Calgary. I hope they get it done, I am not as worried about the backend of a 8 year deal for a couple reasons: the cap will be significantly higher in all likelihood by then and a lot of guys produced in their 35-38 year old seasons (Iginla, Marleau, Shanghai, Selanne). Sign him now and you likely get 6 elite seasons and 3 average seasons over 9 years.

I think the report was he was surprised they were in the process of trading him. Not that he’d already been moved. Either way though it’s not a team he has strong objections about - his list is too big to be entirely strategic

He wasn't a superstar when he signed his last contract.

Players have different lists. Calgary is not considered as bad a place as many make it out to be.

His was probably very similar, just with Montreal in place of Calgary.
