It makes me think that the Flames are just focused on the short term. I see no world in which the Flames trade either Huby or Weegar.

I wouldn't read into the Blues offer too much. St Louis insiders were saying Kyrou wasn't available from the start of the whole thing and Necas would have been a fine starting point in a world where Florida didn't blow its brains out. Necas and a good prospect was more in line with what I was expecting.

Trade was awesome. That St. Louis offer is hilarious in contrast to what Treliving actually got.

True, Alberta was once a premier destination for dinosaurs. And no tax liabilities for them.

That St Louis return is what it would have looked like if St Louis was the only place Tkachuk would sign. Maybe Carolina was Necas + Jarvis...

I think it's pretty safe to say the Flames took the best offer...it's hard to even fathom something beating it. Even if you are rebuild for life the assets you got are more valuable today.

Wow that Cox article in the Toronto Star is some serious garbage. Cox should be ashamed of that piece.

If those are the bones of any deal, then Tree was right that the Florida offer was far the best. And I like Necas.

I look at that St. Louis offer and then I think about how Steinberg etc. emphasized just how good Tree did given how tough of a situation Tkachuk put the team in…and I think I probably underestimated how tough the situation was if that was the foundation for a trade with the Blues.

Still wonder if the Flames scared the Panthers into the thought that an offer sheet was coming from some other team, and Tre had FLA up the ante to have Flames elect club arbitration to take that option off the table for other teams (as FLA couldn't offer sheet MT).

The scary part is Tkachuk could have easily gave the Flames only 1 team to work with.

Probably a good thought. Florida handing off their first round picks like candy

I think this is a good deal for both teams. Florida decided to get a different kind of winger to give the big money and term to play with Barkov for the next 8 years. Tkachuk is 4.5 years younger and a very rare player in the league.
Huberdeau is going to cost 9.5-11.5M to extend for the next 8 years. Weeger is likely in the 5.5-6.5M range so unless the Panthers were ready to do that they avoided what the Flames went through with Johnny and got Tkachuk.
This is as good of a move in terms of win now the Flames could have possibly pulled. Elite forward, top 3 Dman, and futures. Weeger is a huge upgrade on Gudbransen so a really nice pickup.
Pretty shocking deal even a couple of days later. Necas ++ might have been interesting.
I do think this team could use another top 2 line player

Then they could have just refused to trade him. If we’re not gonna get any decent return, call his bluff and let him sit out all season.
Or if he signs for 1 year, trade him as a rental at the deadline.

with the arbitration he couldn't sit out so yeah they didn't HAVE to do anything...he helped himself as much as anyone by including a few teams
