Johnny had a good playoffs this year for the most part, but we know he really doesn't seem to have what it takes to perform over a grueling run. Every playoff loss has been followed by extensive questioning whether these are the players we should be committing all our money towards instead of trying to pivot. Well, the decision was made for us and it might be a good thing in the long run.

Chucky should be a playoff warrior. Feels like every time we make the playoffs I've had the belief that surely this is the year Tkachuk just dominates in the playoffs like he should. Instead, he's had a few individual good games in his playoff career, but has mostly disappointed. Not sure why, I still expect him to figure it out eventually.

Either way, glad we made a big trade while we could here because it's suddenly made this season really interesting. Whether we keep Huberdeau and Weegar long term, or are able to trade them in turn for assets, we should have a lot of exciting possibilities.

This hits the nail on the head for me. I love both players, but have long been concerned that the Flames would have no choice but to pay a combined $20+ mil per season for the two of them despite the concerns that you lay out.

It would be virtually unheard of to make the decision to move on from that core in their peak, but the players made the decision for them which I think will put the team in a better position.

The problems aren't solved just yet and Treliving has a lot of heavy lifting ahead of him, but he's put himself in a position to make the ultimate re-tool or get way more assets/draft picks then he could have in a Tkachuk fire sale should the team end up having to re-build, which is what everyone assumed to happen only a week ago.

I dont think they're going to get it, but it might not be a bad idea.

Realistically the players have been squeezed hard by the CBA where teams have cost-control over players for a pretty good chunk of their careers, which works out okay.

Where this fails though is that when the players are finally UFA and in control of their own destiny and want to sign that last big contract they're usually getting pretty old.

So now these guys are getting paid the Lion's share of their career money in the tail-end of their careers when their production is actually declining.

It might make more sense to actually get these players to UFA sooner, earlier in their careers and then tailor contracts for the late 20s and early 30s to be shorter and more easily bought out without huge cap penalties.

Good for teams, good for players and probably good for the League and PA overall.

Quite sad actually.
They both bolted and left in their prime. They deserve some push back and did it to themselves. Forever tainted now in my eyes. Great Flames at times. But no where near Iginla Status.

Truth or not, it's a bad look. Doesn’t reflect great character for a guy I would want as captain or as face of the franchise. He's smart, and knows well how to play the PR game, so his choice of what to say is very unlikable. Very on-brand for him.

Johnny had the potential that he could have risen to Iginla status with the Flames if he had taken that contract and played it out. Could potentially have even surpassed him if he brought a cup or two home. Don't think he'll ever have the chance to reach that status anywhere else for the rest of his career.

Yup, both walked out on the city, franchise and fans, after one of the better seasons in franchise history. Whatever their reasons they did not want to be Calgary Flames, and did not want to help take the club to new levels of success. They don't care about the success of the team.

Iginla gave the prime of his career to the franchise, through years of playing without an elite centre as well. There is no comparison. Iggy is a legend who gave it all for the franchise.

These guys had every right to make the decisions they made -- but they shouldn't expect the admiration of Flames fans anymore.

He is going to revert back to a 60 point player after having one great season with Huberdeau? Sort of like Tkachuk and how Goodrow willed him to 100 points.

I was curious so I looked it up. How many times did Walt get out of the first round in his career?

According to his stats on hockeydb, I want to say only twice. Once in 2001 (third round), and then the following year (second round).

Not exactly playoff DNA if you think that kind of thing runs in the genes…

Guys! Honestly if you have ever been to Florida you know why he is going. Young, rich, famous and single. He will have an amazing lifestyle interacting with all the celebrities in one of the most beautiful places in North America.

And it's a good team.

I don't think the Flames has any illusion over the past weeks or months that Tkachuk was going to stay, not because of any one or two things here, just because he gets this UFA big money chance (which again he got a year early and forced the Flames into signing that deal) once a career to pick your spot, and wasn't going to be here.

Only slim chance he had of staying, maybe, was if JG committed here, and I think the Flames knew that well and far in advance.

This is the neighbourhood where Ekblad lives.

Spoiler!

And people don’t understand why pro athletes choose Florida and California over Alberta and Manitoba?

Yeah because they are forced to live in Calgary 365 days a year and can't own homes elsewhere...

I have so much respect for Ryan. Watched the IG live with Johnny and Guy and its obvious how much they genuinely like Ryan and vice versa. Most comfortable interview with Johnny I have ever seen. Looking forward to this one
