Good teams have elite talent. If you can lock up Huberdeau long term you do it, even at a slightly uncomfortable number. I’d love to wait and throw a massive number at MacKinnon but that doesn’t seem to be a possibility from his camp. And I agree with other posters that if he isn’t interested, you trade him before the season.

Are these guys going to make the Flames get past Colorado? Or even Edmonton for that matter. I don't see it.
Committing eight years to them would be a mistake but since they never want to rebuild they'll probably do it.

You forgot Oiler, Panther, and Hab fans as well. Other fan bases are extra salty right now.

Checking Hockey REference's most similar stats comparison, the player closest to Weegar that is still active is Kris Letang. Dan Boyle is most similar. Letang's cap hit is $6.1M.
https://www.hockey-reference.com/pla...weegama01.html
Most similar to Huberdeau isBrendan Shanahan. Most similar active player is Phil Kessel. Kessel had a cap hit of $8M.
https://www.hockey-reference.com/pla...huberjo01.html
So $9.5x8 for Huberdeau and $7x8 for Weegar seems fair? Give or take.

I wonder if Brad is totally transparent with these 2 new players coming in and shows them the books.
Didn't he open the books for Johhny and Sean years ago when the Gio cap existed?
I ask because I'm thinking that's kind of a good and bad scenario.
1 your letting them see what your building, what the future holds and this way no one's getting blindsided and the trust factor increases.
2. players see the Intent I'd hope and be more willing to sign extensions.
The bad.....I can't think of anything I all honesty . A little transparency and vulnerability shown to establish this trust has to be good right?
Thoughts anyone ?

With another shrewd move or so why not? What's so great about the Oilers? Same team minus Keith and JP

Sure was nice of Johnny to set the benchmark for 115 point wingers at $9.75 for 7 years instead of $10+ for 8 years.

Would be awkward to trot them out to the press and have them answer questions about their status, if the plan, from both sides, isn't to be here past this season.
That said, assuming there isn't a signed deal announced for both tomorrow, any answers they going to give are going analyzed and taken 5 different ways here depending on your Flames organizational/general personal pessimism and, opinions on Trelving.

Seems to me Edmonton at this point is in their heads, the Flames looked lousy against them the whole series. Getting past them doesn't look to be certain in any way.
All the cap space will be gone if they spend it on Huberdeau and Weegar. And if they still can't get passed certain teams what's the point? The goal is to win it all and not just make the playoffs. It's playing musical chairs again and now landing with two 30 year olds that will demand a massive commitment.

I'm still partial to trading guys at the deadline. Don't see why Huberdeau should be traded before the season if he doesn't want to stay. He'll still be in a contract year and looking to maximize his performance, so why not get Mangiapanne or someone else on a line with him to pump their stats for another max-value deadline trade?

Because they will not trade him in a playoff spot and will lose him for nothing like Johnny
And we all know even if we make the playoffs, we are not going to beat the Avalanches

The Slavin contract is equally nuts, just in the other direction. You're typically not getting a defenceman like him for $5.3M.

It's a pretty unique situation, and I don't think a TDL trade is very likely, but it's definitely possible. There are a few potential contenders who will have significant wiggle room with expiring deals next year (BOS, CAR, STL). It adds a bit of risk for any other team, but if they float him out in advance of UFA day they would almost certainly get a 2nd+ (probably a lot more).
Not much different than what TBL just did with McDo or CBJ with Bjorkstrand.

Slavin signed his deal 5 years ago and is one of the best bargains in the league. He's about as safe/reliable as D-men get...that's definitely not true of Weegar.
Muzzin might be closer, though he was 31.
I'm not sure my suggestion is any better, but I'd say he's somewhere between Risto and Hamilton (a pretty darn wide gap). Is Weegar actually kinda similar to Phaneuf?

They are in 2 Flames head, Gaudreau and Tkachuk, and both are gone. Huberdeau and Weegar don't give a poo about them.
On the bold part, those 2 players haven't play a game for the Flames yet, and you're asking if they can't pass a certain team? I guess if you want to be negative, nothing will help you. Even if Tre traded for Mathews from Toronto you'll still saying they can't get past Edmonton.
On another thought, you seem to think Edmonton going to make it to top 3 in the Pacific. If they ended up wild card team, they will get swept 3 season in a row by the Colorado. Let that sink in for a moment.

I'm saying they can...Monahan/Lucic cap will cover Huby...if that's not a win what is?
D is greatly improved with Weegar
