Anaheim is below the cap floor, so maybe a landing spot for Lucic, who used to live out there. They also need D ...

On a shorter term deal, this could work. His leadership value is underrated, and he knows what is required to win.

Lucic + Valimaki to Anaheim for a mid pick makes a ton of sense to me, they only have 5 nhl guys/1 way contracts in the backend atm and have more than enough cap space to absorb Lucic and his contract. If the flames can manage to offload both Valimaki and Lucic without taking cap back on they will have a good amount of space left to add to the top 6 and really put this team in a position again to go for it next year. Kinda marvelling at how Treliving has managed to do this and I’m eager to see what he does next.

That would be my guess. He probably figured the Flames wouldn't be trading Tkachuk for anyone impactful right now and that they were headed for a rebuild. Now that the Flames have pretty much replaced Gaudreau they're more appealing even though they aren't as strong offensively as they were last season.

If Kadri blocked a trade to the Flames a few years ago, I highly doubt that he will willingly sign here as a UFA, unfortunately

Kadri explained at the time he blocked the trade because he wanted to stay in TO and not get traded, period. It wasn't about Calgary specifically. Whether he sees the Flames as a contender beyond this year is another matter.

He blocked it because he was doing what he could to stay in Toronto.
Putting teams on your no trade list isn't always because you don't want to ever play for them. It's also to lower your risk of being traded from the team you sign with if you think there's a good chance they could trade for you.

Any chance that Kadri “pulls a Hall” and signs with us for one year, at like 8? Seems like his long term options are not happening….. signs with us, makes some money, and maybe the market gets better for him next off season? It’s a HUGE risk for him for sure…… but maybe?

I like Kadri but at that term just give Paul Stastny a call and see about a 1 year deal. Oof "he won't accept less than 7 years from Calgary" that is prohibitive in my opinion

I agree. I would much rather have Stastny here on a 1 or even 2 year deal at his age than Kadri for 7 years.

Evan Rodrigues would be a stellar addition, 3 year deal at 3 per, something like that. It would be a bit of a gamble but he had really good fancy stats and didn’t look out of place in Pittsburgh. Not the greatest of face off stats but he can play centre and is a right hand shot so gives options up and down the lineup. Lots of things out there still which is crazy, can’t remember this many notable guys being left on the board in recent memory.

I’d prefer to keep Valimaki.
We are all so quick to give up on this kid.
Let’s see what he does this summer, maybe he comes into camp rejuvenated and ready to push for a spot.

This added space from Lucic is needed next year if they want to sign Huberdeau. His 5.9M plus Lucic 5.25M is roughly the cost of extended Huberdeau plus a more appropriately priced 4th line forward. You dump Valimaki now to get a lower pick and space to do something this year only.
I'm not paying to move Lucic unless there is a real boost to the team that does not impact next year's cap. The space he creates next year is valuable too

Doubt he puts up even close to numbers he did this year on a other team. I bet his ask is something ridiculous like $9M plus, no teams gonna offer him that and long term. He's getting a hard reality check right now

Would you sign Kadri for 3 years at $7.5?

Yes, definitely. That’s a steal but he ain’t going for that. He definitely wants something longer to retire.

Would Kylington straight across be enough to get us Dvorak from Montreal?
They have been rumoured to be moving Dvorak and they need to clear some cap. They could use another defenseman.
Dvorak gives us another option down the middle, and Treliving has been rumoured to be interested in Dvorak in the past.
I think it’s pretty close, but that we would have to add a bit.

what he wants and what he will get are not always the same. Going 7-8 years for a guy that will turn 32 at the start of this season coming off a career year or not isn't going to happen. Competitive teams don't have a lot of cap and would have to move bigger pieces out and at that point the have to question if shuffling deck chairs is worth the effort. Rebuilding teams it simply doesn't make sense whether or not if he was willing to go there and a middling team you have to ask if he is the piece that puts you in the playoffs. This was the first season his was over a pt per games.... any of the others he didn't even come close to sniffing it. I think both Columbus and Florida are going to regret the ex Flames deals they signed.
