Huberdeau - Lindholm - Toffoli
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Pelletier - Ruzicka/Monahan - Dube
Lucic - Rooney - Lewis

that's how I see things right now. I think Pelletier will be an NHLer next season after taking the AHL by storm, and I think he will do well in the middle six. Could obviously bump up Mangiapane to RW on the first line, but I liked him with Backs and Coleman. Plus give him PP1 time now too. Toffoli could do well with Huby setting him up.

Ideally I'd love to bring in a 2C and bump down Backlund to 3C.

That right side is not very good TBH. We are once again looking for a top 6 right winger and center in my opinion..

My thoughts exactly. Toffoli should not be too line right. That would be a mistake, right away. Imo, third line at best

Over the last 5 years in the entire NHL, only 10 RW's have scored more goals than Toffoli. 4 of those seasons he was on very bad hockey teams. He earns $4.25M a season for this.

3rd line...."at best".

yeah I get people expected more from Toffoli last season, but "3rd line at best" is crazy. Losing Tkachuk means somebody has to step up on RW, and I feel Toffoli will do well with better linemates.

This reminds me of all that James Neal talk. I’m sure it won’t end the same

30 years old, struggling to score, just needs more time was constant in scoring for years.

James Neal was a soft coaster who scored 7 (seven!!!) goals for us in 63 games. We expected more from Toffoli, but he still had a 24 goal, 50 point pace with us. He's going to be fine.

But worthy of being on the top line? I think we should be looking into a top forward, and maybe keeping toffoli on the the second line.

100% should be looking to upgrade that position but as we know those don’t grow on trees

I'd like to add another forward too, I was just laying out how things are right now. You can debate if it's

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Toffoli
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman

or

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Coleman - Backlund - Toffoli

but that's what it is right now.

Maybe Darryl has him working out which seemed to benefit a few last season.

That right wing depth looks very Oilerish.

Last season the Flames had arguably the best top line in hockey. I think it was exposed in the playoffs, but for the regular season all three players were a PPG or better, two cracked 100 points, and all three put up 40+ goals.

One, that is ludicrous. Two, even if we didn't lose 66 percent of that line it was unlikely they were going to repeat. Three, it didn't really matter because they weren't the best top line when it counted.

I don't know how the top line shakes out in the end, but chances are it includes a name like Toffoli or Coleman. And that's just fine. What isn't fine is a cobbled together middle 6. Not on a Sutter team with our roster.

The Flames shouldn't be targeting a top line winger. But they should be looking to overhaul the middle 6 and potentially bottom line.

I guess I’m very bidder from the playoffs and the no shows. He basically went invisible, along with many others.

He scored at a 24 goal pace as a Flames, something James Neal never did.

Maybe a couple tweaks? Toffoli doesn't have the skating ability to play with Huberdeau and Lindholm IMO. He'd be better on second line, but we really don't have a second line, we have two thirds. In an ideal world you want Backlund as your third center. Coleman is a third liner through and through. Mangiapane is the best we have on your second line and a true second liner. Monahan has the bona fides to be a second line center, we're just not sure his body can keep up. Toffoli is actually a pretty good fit with Monahan based on foot speed, so maybe those two need to pair up with Mangiapane? It would be great if Monahan could have a bounce back year, but he's gotta be healthy. I think we are back to being a forward short of having a well balanced team.

Huberdeau - Lindholm - ???
Mangiapane - Monahan - Toffoli
Dube - Backlund - Coleman
Pelletier - Ruzicka - Phillips/Lewis

Flames need to dump Lucic and find a body that can finish some opportunities. We're likely looking bargain bin or trying to work a deal for someone one who their club is not sure about making a commitment to. In the bargain bin you could look at someone like Land-Phil Kessel. Still has the hands. Not the quickest guy in the league but he has shown he can keep up when it matters. His finishing ability would be a nice add. You could go real cheap and look at Jonathan Dahlen who has shown finishing ability in Europe. Maybe consider Daniel Sprong or Danton Heinen? Otherwise we're probably looking at a trade for another forward. RW is thin right now and few RFAs are out there. Makes me throw up to consider, but Puljujarvi could work. A guy like Mathieu Joseph? If you can shift someone to their off wing, maybe Jesper Bratt or Lawson Crouse? Try and pry Alex Fomenton out of Ottawa? The options are not great.

Except he did produce for the Flames
And he is also a far better two way player
What’s exactly is the comparison with Neal outside of fan hyperbole?

Even if Toffoli's game has dropped off, he has one more year on his contract, it would suck but not the end of the world.
