Ya, doesn't look like he thought he could win in Calgary.

Fair enough I guess

All the power to him but to say he knew pretty recently it was time for a change makes me go hmmmm.
In any case he gave the team time to turn him into (mega) assets.

Sounds like it might be impacted by the Gaudreau decision to move on as well. Hopefully the flames can prove him wrong when it comes to winning.

More bulletin board material for Sutter to get the players to play with a chip on their shoulder.

Translation: As soon as Johnny wasn't staying, no chance I am for the next 8 either.

Again, he never had intention of playing this season under the terms of the contract, when he signed his last deal to get him within a year if UFA. It was force a trade or long term extension.

Treliving said today that the Gaudreau decision wasn't a factor at all in Chucky's decision to leave. If that's actually true, it means that Chucky didn't have confidence in the way the Flames were built going forward, even with both him and Johnny re-signing. He looked at it like a GM and pulled the plug on this core.

I can honestly say, with this return, that id take what we have now with the assets and cap room then what we all prayed for locking up Johnny for 10+ and Chucky for 9+.
Period. Full stop.

If I could choose to be a young millionaire in Florida or Calgary I would probably choose Florida too.

May be he saw how lopsided the refs were calling the game, it really doesn't matter how good the team play just can't beat the refs?

I don't hold a grudge, honestly we might have dodged a 10-11M bullet on this one, his new contract is toxic even though the AAV is reasonable.

... unlike that other guy.

Hard to be too upset or disappointed.

Johnny and Chucky were 2 of my favourite Flames of all time, but I think we've all feared they weren't going to get us a Cup. Johnny had a good playoffs this year for the most part, but we know he really doesn't seem to have what it takes to perform over a grueling run. Every playoff loss has been followed by extensive questioning whether these are the players we should be committing all our money towards instead of trying to pivot. Well, the decision was made for us and it might be a good thing in the long run.

Chucky should be a playoff warrior. Feels like every time we make the playoffs I've had the belief that surely this is the year Tkachuk just dominates in the playoffs like he should. Instead, he's had a few individual good games in his playoff career, but has mostly disappointed. Not sure why, I still expect him to figure it out eventually.

Either way, glad we made a big trade while we could here because it's suddenly made this season really interesting. Whether we keep Huberdeau and Weegar long term, or are able to trade them in turn for assets, we should have a lot of exciting possibilities.

Cue in a Flames/Panthers final with the Flames winning on home ice, nothing like a depressing 5 hour flight back to Miami.

I'd rather thump Columbus or NYR.

I think he's had one foot out the door for a while. I sort of doubt the full honesty of this explanation because the big sticking point I keep hearing about was that he wanted out of Canada. I think he told Vancouver and Edmonton at the draft he didn't want to play in Canada which is why he fell to us.

In terms of chance to win in Florida vs Calgary I doubt he realistically is sitting there crunching numbers and WAR and saying Florida has 3.5% better chance at a cup than Calgary in the next 5 years or whatever. he likes the money and he likes Florida and he doesn't like Canada. i won't boo him because he is right he did help the Flames along the process and the return was pretty decent.

Let's be honest, he wanted the money, sun and to party. I don't blame him, and am happy he was honest with the team and got what was better for the team. I didn't think he should be part of the core anymore based on being a number one or two option, so I'm glad he made the decision he did as we got a better asset (though older), and have the option to rebuild and get that true #1 or #2. He had a unique skillset in that he was an agitator who had decent hands, but I just didn't care for his playoff performances that last few years. We're better off in this divorce, and that's not just an angry ex talking, it's the reality when you have to pay these guys through the nose when inevitably they over achieved in the regular season in their contract year and will inevitably regress in the following years.

I wonder if he ever imagined Huberdeau was coming back in return when he picked Florida because he thought they could win?

He was going to leave since signing his last contract
The decision was to see if he would change his mind and stay, not the other way around

As far as believing if the Flames can win? Ask Sutter, he didn’t think so. What make you think Johnny and Tkachuk would?

Well he flat out said it wasn't and kinda threw Gaudreau under the bus for how he handled his departure

I've got nothing but respect for Tkachuk. He was up front and honest with Treliving and gave the Flames a chance at getting a good return.
