He's sort of a childhood fan of the team. It probably broke his heart to hear he wasn't going to sign a retirement contract there.
However, he's a high character guy and a leader. I think he'll find a way to be happy in Calgary, especially if he's accepted and adored by the fans. Always seemed to be in it to please a fanbase.

If anything, Huberdeau thinking he might re-sign in Florida pours a bit of cold water on the thought that he only wanted to go “home” to Montreal at the end of next season. Of course, now that the bandaid has been pulled off I think all options are now on the table, but the Flames can offer him a huge contract now and he might like that security (if in fact Calgary is a viable landing spot).

I'm so glad it wasn't Phaneuf 2.0

As much excitement i have getting Sutter back as a coach i shudder at the passing thought of Sutter as GM 2.0.

Is it not advantageous for Huberdeau, as a Canadian, to play the bulk of his time in Canada?
It’s all well and good to have no state tax, but federal taxes are still very real. Is his take home pay not greater in Canada as a) a citizen and b) his $10.5M USD salary or w/e being worth $13.5M in the currency of the country he lives in?

Burke talked about the Phaneuf trade in his book (as he was the GM in Toronto at the time). Basically, Burke said he only wanted Phaneuf, and Sutter said he wasn’t available. The next day Sutter apparently changed his mind; earlier that day Ron Wilson (coach for Toronto) told Burke he wanted to get rid of three guys: Nik Hagman, Jamal Mayers, and Ian White.
Lo and behold, Sutter asked for three players: Hagman, Mayers, and Matt Stajan. Burke didn’t really want to trade Stajan but was willing to do it to get Phaneuf. Sutter added Sjostrom to make the salaries work, and Burke was okay with that because he liked Sjostrom. Finally Darryl asked for a defenceman, specifically Ian White.
Burke was probably over the moon at this point, but he asked that Sutter include prospect Keith Aulie as well. Sutter said no ****ing way. The next day, Sutter relented and Aulie was included.
So basically Burke traded away three guys that the Leafs didn’t want plus Stajan for Phaneuf.

Apologies if this has been posted but the Athletic had a few writers grade this trade:
https://www.google.ca/amp/s/theathle...eegar/%3famp=1
Interesting everyone without a doubt say Chucky is better then Hubey but everyone gives us the win on the trade overall.

This was the first corroboration I saw outside of this forum that he does spend time in summer here so I’ll take that as a good sign! Imagine that, a top NHLer who actually comes here in Calgary in the off-season (for training or whatever reason) versus all the rejection we’ve heard about our city lately!

I don’t know if this has been posted before but according to Allen Walsh (Huberdeau’s agent) that no state tax angle is irrelevant.

Sounds like the Huberdeau camp is upset that they were expecting an offer from Florida that never arrived.
Tre just needs to put an offer in front of Huberdeau like Florida was supposed to and already the player and agent should feel better about the Flames than the Cats.
At least that's what I'm telling myself.

Yep, that last year when he tells the Panthers he won’t commit to an extension with them, after that bonus is paid he’s cheap in actual cash.

I wonder what Treliving would have got in return for Phaneuf, Iggy, and Bouwmeester. Sutter was terrible at maximising value on trades, but he was a master at signing players long term for discounted prices. It's too bad he and Treliving couldn't voltron themselves into an uber GM

8x$10.5M should make him feel real loved.
And offer him the chance to wear 14 if he wants it.

This is the fear that several people including myself have already voiced. This is why Treliving has to put a self-imposed season start deadline to sign or trade these guys IMO. If he waits until the season starts and the Flames look good, it might not be his decision anymore. I'm guessing ownership would probably prioritize playoff revenue over a retool and nix any trade

I knew my wife was the one because of that trade. We hadn’t been together that long when that trade went down and I spent that whole day on CP, watching SportsCentre and talking to friends about hockey instead of the original plans we had and she just rolled with it. Hilariously, yesterday was our 10 year wedding anniversary.
