You don't think adding a superstar forward who grew up there, would at least help them sell tickets?
You could argue that adding Johnny would hurt their ability to tank. But looking at their roster, it doesn't appear that they're trying to tank anyway.

I honestly believe Gaudreau sincerely wanted to be here. Perhaps it just wasn't 100% his decision only in the end.

To be fair they were hit by a lot of injuries last year but I watched a few Philly games and they don’t have a depth and simply don’t play all that well.

A week or so later, the Tkachuk trade resolved, with a healthy return. Upon reflection, I've moved past any feelings of ill will towards Johnny.
Last season was one of the most fun I've had. I wish him well, and welcome him back in January.

I don't doubt at all if he was still single or had he got married a few years ago that he would have most likely re-signed.
I don't think his wife necessarily hated Calgary but she wasn't there long enough to fall in love with it like he and his family did. So when it came down to deciding it was easy for her to say she preferred to be closer to family especially while being pregnant.

she got to live here during the Delta/Omicron phases of the pandemic and experience our awesome -25 or below for weeks straight this past February. odds were stacked against us from the start.
