It doesn’t matter where he got that information or not, he could have chosen not to listen to Darryl. A great manager uses everything and everyone he has at his disposal to be the best he can be. If he got it from his coach, assistants, or even the internet it doesn’t matter.

At the end of the day the decisions are on him. He gets all the credit.

Everything is linked. One could say that Treliving is getting his information from the coach and is following that direction. However, I agree with others that taking your coaches requests and comments is one of the key job duties for a GM. If he builds a roster without his coach's input, then isn't he missing the point?

I also occasionally speculate if the coach input was part of the terrible pro scouting we have seen in past seasons that has improved recently. Coach says that they want this type of right winger; Treliving asks about James Neal; and, coach says yes that is exactly who I'd like. Total speculation on my part but the amount of scouting that coaches do would mean that they should be up to date on a lot of players in the league. It only makes sense that the GM would solicit their opinion.

The two major flaws during Treliving's tenure have been goaltender and coach, both of which are fixed now. We will see how the contract situation sorts out this summer but he's certainly earned more time from my perspective.

That's probably not a good example. In that particular year, the conversation was probably more like this—

Coach: ‘We really need a scorer on right wing.’
Treliving: ‘The only one on the UFA market right now is James Neal.’
Coach: ‘Have you tried trading for one?’
Treliving: ‘Tried everywhere. They're just not available, except at a price that would gut the team.’
Coach: ‘Oh, hell. Let's hold our noses and hope Neal works out.’

But I do take your point in general.

If there is going to be a Treliving thread on the first page it should be this one.

This team is going to be a popular pick among the media to win the cup. They are big, skilled, tough, deep and have an elite goalie. 2 of the top 7 scorers in the league and 4 of the top 25 goal scorers. Top 3 team in goals against.

Sutter gets a lot of credit for turning this team into a contender but Brad got these players for him and if this team goes to the third round he is going to have a great shot at GM of the year.

I agree things can happen in the next few weeks and months that can have the other thread pinned on page one but until then we should be celebrating the great moves and be happy where we are.

If they falter in the Playoffs it NOT on Brad.

Its all in the plan.

BT has nailed it here. He can now pivot easily depending on the performance on the ice next season.

If Huberdeau and Weegar don't move the needle and we are borderline playoff team. Move them at deadline for king's ransom.

Sutter has just this year left on contract. We either look great as a team and we re-sign both players prior to trade deadline or are mediocre and trade both players and begin the retool post-Sutter.

It is remarkable how most of our core is due new contracts before 24-25 season. If we want we are set up for selloff that begins at trade deadline, continues in off-season next year and completes by trade deadline next year.

I have to give him credit for a very creative trade. The return has a web of multiple outcomes. Some better than others. I think signing both players is clearly the best outcome as not being able to retain either isn’t going to help the current reputation of players not wanting to stay in Calgary.

He has a pretty tough job, and like players...I think top management types will avoid Calgary for an easier job. He's learned some hard lessons in his time...but I'm not so sure a replacement wouldn't go thru the same cycle again.

Not having an arena is one thing in “our” control that we have fumbled badly and is having some level of impact

Time to bump this thread again. Honestly it is time to extend Tree after what he has been able to pull off given the tough circumstances. Having 2 franchise homegrown superstars leave is the ultimate gut punch.

The Tkachuk blockbuster was an amazing return considering the lack of leverage and options Treliving had. Now that he has locked up Huberdeau it locks this trade in as a clear win for the Flames.

Brad is a hell of a GM and hopefully he is given an extension

Goddamn I can't believe Treliving turned this off season around the way he did.

Team is already better on paper than last years IMO despite their two top players leaving.

Org was a laughing stock 2-3 weeks ago.

If they somehow add another top 6 forward it'll just be icing on top of the icing that's already on top of the cake.

Either that, or they should take him right out of hockey operations and put him in charge of making a new arena deal. I understand that in his days running the WPHL, he brokered a few such deals for the teams in his league.
