EEAAO was good but I didn’t love it as much as others. It was wonderfully odd and quite touching but I felt like it was a bit too long and that caused it to drag at times. Still highly recommended though. Unique movies that are an original non recycled IP are few and far between these days.

I didn't like The Northman. It was beautifully shot and the production value was there but it was a 2 hour movie with and hour 45 of fever dreams. It's a personal thing, but I can't stand that type of storytelling. Just give me a beautiful, straight forward, historically accurate Viking movie without the weird auteur elements. It made it really boring.

Didn't know where to put this but I figured this was likely the best spot for it.

I am a huge Michael Mann fan, and this is a fantastic piece on him in the New York Times. It talks about his upcoming movie "Ferrari", his creative process, Heat, his attention to detail, also a book he has written called "Heat 2"...

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/20/m...ri-heat-2.html

Quote:
If there were any doubt that we are firmly ensconced in Mann territory, this evaporates 40 pages in, as the character Chris Shiherlis (Kilmer in the film) “powers up to the entrance at Caesars Palace in a dirty black convertible Corvette,” “tosses the keys to the parking valet” and strides onto the casino floor in a “blue silk shirt.” Mann told me he has “a huge plan” to turn the book into a movie: “Not a small movie. Not a streamed series. A large movie.”

Crazy. I was just watching a YouTube video no the process of creating the original Heat. Mann had basically already made the same movie for a TV pilot called L.A. Takedown:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.A._Takedown

A real life police officer that had advised Mann, during the filming of Miami Vice, told him stories about meeting a criminal he was trying to take down for coffee. That eventually became the basis for the story.

Mann had initially wanted to turn that into a grittier version of Miami Vice, but the pilot just didn't take.

After his success with Last of the Mohicans he was given a much bigger budget for another film and chose to remake "L.A. Takedown" into Heat.

Watched Men and The Black Phone last week.

Men was very meh. The acting was excellent and there was plenty of good craftmanship in the movie, but ultimately the movie was an artsy dream piece that mostly wasn't very interesting and had nothing worth mentioning to say about it's topics. Would not recommend. Unusual but not nearly as smart as it thinks it is.

The Black Phone was a solid horror/thriller with surprisingly un-annoying jump scares, nice combination of supernatural and real life horror, and what I thought was a satisfying ending, even if it came with a bit too much cheese. Won't change your life, you won't miss anything spectacular if you don't see it, but it's still a pretty good genre film, and original enough to be interesting. Or in other words, it's one of the good ones from Blumhouse. Would recommend.

Jordan Peele ought to be due for a good one. Get Out was excellent but 'Us' was brutal.

I'm excited for Nope too.

I think it's a top 5 movie title of all time. Hopefully the movie lives up to it.

I watched 'The Black Phone' and I concur.

I'm not a 'Horror Genre' guy, but I really enjoyed it. Its just a nice, well done, well written and acted and very simple fun Horror movie.

Its tight, it stays within itself and tells an interesting story.

Elvis was terrific. Definitely one of the best music biopics I’ve seen to date (and I still haven't seen the Queen/Mercury film yet!)

I didn't really know much about Elvis, likely due to being born a generation later - especially his early life or the behind the curtains-Elvis. The film really opened my eyes at how tragic his life was: the spending, drugs, his entourage and gang of hangers-on, and financial abuse (to name a few). I didn't know he spent the last of his career washed up in Vegas, and knew nothing about his manager, Col. Parker. It was all quite illuminating, and when we got home from the theatre I dug a little more into his story.

Austin Butler absolutely nailed the role of Elvis. Totally killed it. He had the looks, mannerisms, the voice, and the swagger.

Tom Hanks was the piece that didn't really work for me. He went all-in and immersed himself in the character, but felt like more of a fat Tom Hanks caricature. Reminds me of Colin Farrell in The Batman, but Farrell's Penguin worked.

Edit: funny, I was telling my mom about the movie, and she knew all this stuff about Elvis. Like every_single_detail from how old Pricilla Presley was when her and Elvis met to the colonel "being a real bastard."

I really enjoyed it. I was exhausted from a long day of work in the sun, so I am planning to see it again with my brother sometime during the week.

Not gonna give any spoilers (obviously). Loved the characters and there were some amazing scenes/visuals.

Don’t usually go see movies more then once in theaters but will for this one.

Nope was fine. Way, way better than Us but not nearly as good as Get Out. It lacks the social commentary of the previous two but has a much better plots and story than Us, but again, not as good as Get Out.

Some cool scenes. Not very creepy at all. As some reviews say it’s a bit of a mishmash thematically but holds it all together well enough.

I can agree with most of this, like I said I was exhausted from work near the end, so stoked to see it Tuesday again.

Definitely not what I was fully expecting (not that it made it any different)

That scene over the house was so good.

Personally, not a superhero movie guy, so I tend to enjoy these summer blockbusters more.

Finished Jurassic Park 3 yesterday, watched all 6 this year. My rankings:

Jurassic Park - one of the very best movies I've ever seen, it's perfect.

Jurassic Park 2 The Lost World - not as good as the first but better than anything that comes after.

Jurassic World - Big dumb fun, somethings work very well (like a working park) and some things are so dumb. Why would the military want to have dinosaurs . But if you shut your brain off you will have fun.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom - appreciate them returning to horror but still some really dumb ideas. People are buying dinosaurs for hilariously low amounts and having dinosaurs in a house doesn't work for me.

Jurassic World Dominion- Forgettable end to the new trilogy and focusing more on locusts and corporate espionage instead of dinosaurs. I will say that the dinosaurs at least look good here

Jurassic Park 3 - a total misfire and the CGI has not aged well at all.

Spoiler!

JP 2 never should of have had Rexy come to the mainland, (didn’t happen in the book) trying to be Godzilla.
