The question around extensions is going to be the top topic of conversation for sure.

I imagine Tree will just go with “we now have options” as a response

"We're going to work diligently with MacKenzie and Jonathan"

"We have more options than we did yesterday"

Book it.

The difference between Huberdeau expiring at 37 vs 38 is kinda academic.

You’re banking on him being worth the deal for at least 4-5 years, and optimistic that he’ll be able to at least be a 50-60 point PP threat on the back end, same as you would be with Gaudreau.

Except in Huberdeau’s case, we get an extra year at $5.9M to play with.

Price of poker, and more importantly, the price of immediately showing the hockey world that this is a desirable place to play.

I mean Toffoli is pretty much equal to Tkachuk in terms of skating and he did fine on the top line lol.

But I agree - I think Hubs is better with quick players (played with Bennett and Duclair this season?). Maybe we try Mang on the off wing?

Hopefully both guys sign extensions right away, but if they balk at it at all hopefully Tre wastes no time in flipping them.

I suspect he will too, as I'd imagine having your two "franchise" players bolt on you in the same off season is going to leave Treliving with very little appetite for hanging on to players who hesitate in their commitment to being here for the long haul.

Pelletier or Phillips. Maybe Dube finally breaks out.

I think if either or both don’t want to sign now they should be traded immediately. I don’t necessarily think they’ll fetch more at the deadline.

It also means Calgary wasn't on his list of teams he'd block a trade to.

Yeah, I'm sure we'll find out in the presser either way

Exactly. Work on a deal over the next week. If they can't get it done the returns will be massive.

Which just means Huberdeau didn't have Calgary as one of his 8 teams he won't go to.

...which I suppose is kind of a win.

Fully agree.

I'm also thinking of what their returns would be. Huberdeau to a team he'd sign with? That's worth at least two 1st round picks. Weegar? At least a 1st.

If the Flames walk away from Tkachuk with four 1st round picks and Schwindt, I mean...it's certainly not a bad start to a rebuild.

Why is not getting an extension offer equivalent to not waiving in your mind

He easily could have gotten the call saying we want to deal you do you waive and aren’t going to offer an extension.

These guys don't know everything that went down as much as they pretend they do

I have to think Brad talked to him

Yeah, protection is typically only one year, then the following year, it's locked-in.

That happened recently with the Duchene trade where Ottawa sent their 2018 first rounder to Colorado with the condition that if it was top-10 pick, the Sens would have the option of giving Colorado their 2019 first instead.

The Sens decided to keep their 2018 first to take Tkachuk fourth overall, so Colorado got their 2019 first without protection, and it ended up being fourth overall as well.

I might be dumb but how does that confirm he didn’t waive?

3) I simply fear that the Flames will lose out on converting these new players into assets because of the organization's insistence on playing 2-3 home playoff games a year

That will be an interesting thing to watch. I would have trouble believing that the management and ownership enjoyed the press recently about a couple players spurning Calgary. So, I can understand both people who are hesitant and people who believe that Calgary wouldn't dare allow that to happen two summers in a row.
