However I would rebut by saying if we are just a fringe playoff team at deadline it is likely Sutter relents and let's BT do what he needs to do.
BT needs to have a conversation with Sutter now. If the team looks good early in season and yet BT cannot re-sign Huberdeau he is going to have to let BT pull trigger on trade.
Even Sutter recognizes that you cannot trash the franchise when you have a golden moment to set it up better for a proper retool/rebuild once you realize you are staring down a dark pit of despair a few steps away otherwise.
|
Hopefully they sign Huberdeau and this is all mute, but I suspect that Sutter has this team in a much better spot than bubble at the deadline. The Pacific sucks and the Flames today have a better defence than last year and a forwards group that is worse, when that all comes out in the wash I suspect it is another top 10 regular season team, which in the Pacific means 1st or 2nd.

unlikely, but after everything that happened these last couple of weeks it'd be such a boss move if they announced contract extensions for both at the presser today.

Great trade to get two more UFAs.
If they don't sign you're where you were with Tkachuk this summer ... move them as one year rentals now.
Don't let the next season dictate your course. Do it now.

That’s a great take. Finalize the future one way or another now. Leaving it to the trade deadline brings too many other pressures into play.

Great trade and the below is for the small minority and you know who you are!
We can't replace 219 points!
First off, they played on the same line and same pp unit and no pk so good chance that if they combined for 6 points that it resulted in closer to 3 goals for the team and not 6.
Best would be to subtract their goals ( 82 combined) and then add Huberdeau's (30) and now we are looking at at 52 goal difference and not 219!
After that you need to look at how Flames won most of their 50 games. Most of them were lobsided as they scored 103 goals more than they needed to so did we really need those 52 extra goals?
For entertainement sure but not to win the game as Flames hardly needed to outscore their problems last year.
As some have said D looks better than last year and maybe a few of our prospect will surprise or the wizard will present us with another surprise!
I for one feel much better this morning than yesterday morning.

I’m curious what number Huberdeau will take since he was 11 with the Panthers.

Yes, at first it seemed like a weird scenario, but Bingo posted it earlier. There's a higher than zero percent chance that Huberdeau and Weegar are flipped before the season starts. This team is absolutely good enough to make the playoffs. You don't trade those 2 guys at the deadline if you're in contention. So if they give the indication that they would like to test the market next summer, start shopping them now.
The scarier scenario could be that the directive from ownership is to get the best "now" players possible. This was the best package available, risks be damned. Maybe the 1st is to soften the blow of losing at least one of them for nothing.
I'm honestly not sure which is more likely.

The debate on Weegar is interesting to me having watched him a lot.
The underlying stats indicate a general level of play that everyone will really love. He skates very, very well and can push the pace of play up the ice. Makes good passes too. He plays very well with his stick in the defensive end and is a solid shot blocker. He has better than average offensive skills in both stick handling and reading the play in the offensive zone. He can shoot the puck at an above average level in both power and accuracy.
However,
He does make some timely errors. When he does make a mistake, it's really brutal. It doesn't happen all the time either, but they're the kind of mistakes that will drive many fans crazy.
Additionally...I think Sutter will work on that with him while pairing him with an above average defensive partner (Tanev?). I fully expect him to be back to his elite level he was at 2 seasons ago, when the Norris talk was very legitimate.
I don't think BT picked him up as a stop gap for this year. I think he sees him as a core piece going forward. I think Weegar gets signed before Huberdeau, but I fully expect that BT wants to sign both players long term. I do not expect him to flip the players for picks at the deadline this year. It's not his M.O.

Considering just Huberdeau and prospect/pick it’s good asset management by Florida. Trade for an equally good player with a maybe more unique skillset and gain 4-5 years of runway. Weegar I guess is to balance the UFA risk and apparently they’ve been looking at trading him for a few years for whatever reason.

Hey Bingo…
Not asking for you to tell us what the rumour that you heard regarding Lucic was, but can you tell us if it’s still possible now that we’re past the draft and most of the meaningful FA signings?

I don't think Tre gets burned by the UFA thing twice. Team rebuild could still be very happy about this trade. If the rumors are true with Gaudreau that he verbally accepted an offer and then re-neged what's Tre to do. I am curious if other offers on Tkachuk will leak now.
