Weegar has been a lottery machine defensively for over a year. He's much better in transition and a better passer but he tries to do too much and gets into trouble because of that.
How much of him did you watch last season? Most of the season he was posting dominant possession numbers. When Ekblad was out the Panthers just kept chugging along with Weegar as their #1. It wasn't until late in the season did those numbers start to drop a bit.
With the team the Flames had left, they were in win now mode.
Top D in the league.
Vezina finalist goalie
Top coach
To bring in another top 4 d, it has possibly made the team better on the defensive side.
They have salary cap room to add another $5 million guy, assuming Brad can't move Lucic / Monahan.
Results matter. And this is a result nobody expected, plus many would argue we fleeced them.
If either guy resigns, its a massive win considering the position the Flames were in 24 hours ago.
It is a loss if both guys play one year and leave. The only way that is not a loss is if Weeger is the Rob Ramage of this team and Huberdeau is the Rick Wamsley. That being said, I suspect Huberdeau will be turning down a crazy lucrative offer this summer in the event that he does not sign longterm.
I really like this trade, but have to think there is a pretty big risk Huberdeau doesn’t sign here which I think the Flames and Panthers knew which is why the rest of the package was so good. As long as the Flames manage the asset properly I still really like it.
Could still turn Huberdeau into the package a lot of people were wanting prior to the trade deadline or draft next year (Ie. budding young high end player + blue chip prospect + 1st). I really think Tre did a great job of not going full rebuild by backfilling losses with a premium asset to keep the team competitive in a weak Pacific division (which may not be weak in a season or two) and still have flexibility to rebuild with that asset if a shift in direction needs to happen.
This is Grade A asset management.
Huberdeau as a rental isn't getting you a high end player, blue chip prospect, and a 1st. Which is why I hope Treliving has an idea of the odds of locking him up. Hopefully that extension happens this summer. The fact that so much extra was added to the deal makes me slightly nervous. That seems like a bit of hedge against the risk. Lock up Huberdeau and it's a great trade. If he walks then I think Brad screwed up because trading a 24 year old 100+ point player should bring you back something solid to build around for the next 5+ years. If we trade him as a rental I think we just end up really watering down the return for Tkachuk but I guess time will tell.
Just want to clarify something on my stance after thinking for a couple hours:
1) in terms of value, I think the Flames did very well with this trade
2) if Huberdeau and/or Weegar don't work out/won't re-sign, they can be traded for high value assets
3) I simply fear that the Flames will lose out on converting these new players into assets because of the organization's insistence on playing 2-3 home playoff games a year
Totally reasonable fear given history.
I just hope they treat this as a summer of decision.
Gaudreau out.
Tkachuk out.
Team thin.
Great trade to get two more UFAs.
If they don't sign you're where you were with Tkachuk this summer ... move them as one year rentals now.
Don't let the next season dictate your course. Do it now.

Huberdeau gets you a slightly better return than Stone at the deadline I think. Probably a grade A prospect and a first.
Talks about experience at Head Coach (with Maurice coming in) and taking the next step after getting bounced in Round 2 by their rivals. Sounds familiar.

Yes, has Treliving said anything on these guys yet?
Well, it's not just about winning a specific trade to me, it's more about, has this team improved from last season and my answer to that right now is a big NO. So in my opinion, if this team was going to take a big step backwards, then my preference would've been a trade for all futures and to rebuild.
The nice thing about this trade, is that option is open still. We got two futures in this deal. And I’d we can’t sign, or to your point improve the team, the two tenured pieces can be moved later for futures.
The future for the Flames (short or long term) looks way better than it did 24th so ago, and way better than any of us even imagined it could this quickly since tge events of the past two weeks.
