Sure maybe he has some bad giveaways but he’s absolutely a top pairing dman. There is no arguing that. He’s 31st in the NHL on TOI/GP that’s the definition of top pairing dman.

His stats are interesting ... will be curious to see how it plays on a different team.
Elite in almost every split, but hugely elite offensively and less so defensively.
Honestly not trying to throw cold water on any of this, but his numbers could down correct if he's not in a system that throws everything at the walls like Florida did.
Sutter will help on the defensive side too.
Florida got a cold reality on how regular season and playoffs are different. It does look like they moved two of their better regular season players out for a guy that by style and perhaps not history is better suited for the style of the post season.

Also...this is why you pick best player available in the draft. Try getting a haul like this if you pick Juolevi instead just because he is more likely to extend in Canada....

I really want a rebuild around getting as many draft assets as possible. The core has changed which I’m happy about but essentially now it’s Huberdeau and Tanev’s team. Still not close to Colorado.

Huberdeau is a better forward than anyone on St. Louis. Kucherov might be better on TB, and Mackinnon on Colorado but that’s about it.
I agree the team has lacked speed, though Huberdeau is at least as fast as Gaudreau IIRC. Team speed went up by losing Tkachuk. Other than Towes and Makar, what D pairing is better than Tanev/Weegar and who has a better top 4?

I would keep Hanifin and re-sign Kylington. Move Valimaki
If Mackey is our #7 defenceman going into the season we’re in really good shape.

Oh come on, we’re comparing him to a guy Treliving picked up late in the UFA market last year. Like September late. Weegar is better at everything than Gudbranson except throwing fists.

Massive Value. If he extends I don't think anyone here is complaining, if he doesn't that's an extremely attractive contract for a rental come TDL to a contender

I'd agree with that!
Everyone should have their own opinion.
What get me in a knot is suggesting the majority doesn't have critical thinking and are just lemmings. That's not fair at all.

I'm just saying Gudbransson was more reliable with the Flames.
Don't get me wrong, I love Weegar as a player but Sutter needs to tell him to simplify his game and not try to be Bobby Orr.

Could still turn Huberdeau into the package a lot of people were wanting prior to the trade deadline or draft next year (Ie. budding young high end player + blue chip prospect + 1st). I really think Tre did a great job of not going full rebuild by backfilling losses with a premium asset to keep the team competitive in a weak Pacific division (which may not be weak in a season or two) and still have flexibility to rebuild with that asset if a shift in direction needs to happen.
This is Grade A asset management.

No wonder people are so mad at JG if they think that picky UFA's get this much in return as rentals.

This is it, even if neither guy re-signs they both can fetch a first round pick at the deadline.
So you're looking at three first round picks for Tkachuck which is excellent value.

I primarily want Huberdeau signed asap because I'm already tired of the "yeah but what if he walks for free?!?" crowd on Twitter and such.

What do you think a team would have given up for Johnny Gaudreau at the trade deadline this year?

I think Flames fans were so worried about getting a terrible return (see Phaneuf) that getting a quality package back caused some strong emotional responses.
What amazes me is this trade essentially has no downside. If we sign Huberdeau I think it's a massive win as we still have other pieces to extract value from. If we can't sign Huberdeau we have more pieces to move around and can still do a full rebuild.
I'm in the camp who thinks Florida made a knee jerk reaction to their playoff losses and bought into some league wide Tkachuk hype. Of course only time will tell.
