The only time you have to wait until January 1st is if you sign someone for a single year contract, that is when you can extend that player.

This is my dream. Having watched McDavid constantly own Hanifin over the years and the eventual huge contract he will get is a perfect trade piece.

However, IMO you need to aim for a potential semi-superstar center in the deal

Find a center around the same age or even younger the team identifies as ready to take the next step and Package Hanifin and go get that guy.

If we could get another Lindholm this team actually looks decent. (Still would need a #1 D but thats a different problem unless we believe Hanifin has another level in him)
