I’m guessing this trade is sort of kicking the “trading a superstar” can down the road.
Tkachuk didn’t want to play on a 1 Year deal, so it takes away the distraction.

After this season, Lindholm, Tanev, Hanifin, Backlund, and Toffoli have 1 year to UFA.

Without a Huberdeau extension, I imagine the rebuild/fire sale begins next off-season…or perhaps this coming trade deadline.

I honestly feel like I sold a used car with the engine light on but I cleared the codes right before the guy showed up.

Tkachuk is really good but I think his reputation exceeds the player by a mile. That being said he will do well there, better than NJ ect.

You’d think Huberdeau would be thinking the same as Tkachuk coming off a career year in points and not sure if he will ever repeat that especially being on a different team.

I’d expect a contract extension soon from Huberdeau, and I’d expect Weeger to drive up his value from a Darryl Sutter coached team like Gudbranson.

Favourite hf Oilers initial reaction so far (right after they mused about a Bennett 1 for 1 and the return came out)

I suspect Lindy’s gonna sign here - team full of Swedes and he’s going to love playing with Huberdeau. Backlund will extend if they want him. Tanev sill sign a reasonable shorter deal. Hanifin - who knows but he could sign or be dealt.

What this does it make this team mediocre for the next 3-4 year. Might make the playoffs a couple times, might miss, but never good enough to be a consistent Cup threat.

I'm trying not to be a Debbie Downer but this is the exact opposite of what I wanted to happen. I will say though, I expected worse if the Flames were going to go in this direction.
I can't express how glad I am that you feel this way. Really, I am serious. You and the asset management rebuild crowd can live in your own little world and eat misery. I have a hockey team to cheer for again.

Funny, a year ago, Vancouver traded Juolevi, also to Florida. The return was... not quite the same.

They got Juho Lammikko, who they didn't even give a league-minimum qualifying offer to this year, and Noah Juulsen, who played 8 games in Vancouver last year and is on a one-year league-minimum contract for next season.

Meanwhile, Juolevi played 10 games for Florida before getting claimed off waivers by Detroit, who didn't give him a qualifying offer and he's now a UFA.

Flames have more assets today than yesterday
Meh, keep it simple if you want, but I'll reserve judgement until the contract situations are sorted (or not sorted).

hmmmm Juolevi is this year's Gudbradson for Sutter?

Even if he doesn't play a single regular season game for the Flames I think we should sign him.

maybe just sit this one out and let us have our fun

Flames fans deserve it after the last few months

As much as some fans wanted a tear down (myself included), this isn't Calgary's MO and has never been. So that option wasn't even on the table

This is a excellent deal that is still about winning now, which is understandable, as you have guys like Markstromm and Lindholm and some other key guys entering the last year of contracts

Not sure how people can be down on the trade, with the exception of not getting a bit younger superstar (which Huberdeau is).

No one knows what the other offers were; maybe guys like Kyrou or Bratt were off the table and maybe Carolina was offering a Teravainen? Tough trade to hate when you don't know what the other offers were.

Signing both these guys would make this a huge trade in favor of Calgary imo... Tkachuk is a unicorn, but I've seen disinterested/unmotivated Chucky too.

Just popping in to say, wow, what a return. How am I supposed to sleep tonight, I have to work at 7am. Absolute win from every angle. Elite 1st line talent. Top pairing defender. 1st round pick. Prospect. Cap space. I mean, you literally couldn’t draw it up better. What a night to be a Flames fan. Feels good after a tough couple of weeks. Enjoy this folks, this kind of win doesn’t happen often. GFG

As good as they were in regular season, with an absolute perfect storm of things going well for the Flames from Vezina quality goaltending to lack of injuries (Monahan excluded) and not fighting Covid like other teams, the Flames still couldn’t compete with the big dogs with Gaudreau and Tkachuk making 13M.

Not sure why we would expect the Flames to have been contenders with them making 20M, especially when Lindholm gets his raise. Think fans were fooling themselves.

Once Gaudreau left, worst case scenario was signing Tkachuk and being a middle of the pack team again for 8 years.

So I’m not seeing a downside here.

If Flames sign them to fair contracts, great, new core to replace one that couldn’t win.

If Flames don’t sign them, either they suck by deadline and pick up assets and can (hopefully) start rebuilding properly.

If Flames are competing and keeping them but let them walk as UFA it once again “forces” the Flames to consider a rebuild. And then they have an extra 1st.

Could always sign Huberdeau to a contract and he immediately regresses but you can say that about anything or anyone.

I’m disappointed in the lack of futures, though. No question.

Honestly…wish I was more excited about this than I am.

Cole Schwindt is a big boy at 21 years old . 6'2 183 centre.

Didn't take his 19/ 20 age year due to ohl being done due to covid went and played AHL for 10 games and got a goal and an assist last year for the checkers put up 40 points in 72 games.

He got 71 points in56 games a 18 year old in the OHL

If he takes another step this year he is a great peice back.

^^ I agree with all those folks. Tkachuk is going to do fine in Florida - better than almost any other rumoured destination. They are deep enough up front where Huberdeau’s loss can be mitigated on the left side.

When people refer to Tkachuk as a unicorn does it mean how he magically disappears in the playoffs?

Now that I've had a bit of time to think about it, you're probably right. Still feels like we've added the value of about 3 first round picks here though. I was preparing for the worst from a Tkachuk trade.

We already have a first and a descent prospect. Huberdeau, even as a rental, will bring a massive haul at the deadline. Plus Weager...
