No state income tax.
Also, the rumour was that he was one player who had the most negative reaction to all the COVID restrictions here. As long as DeathSantis is running things in Florida, COVID restrictions won't be a concern.
I'd also guess that while these guys love the adoration when they're on the ice, the anonymity while living your day-to-day life has appeal too.

It’s for the cap hit to squeeze in a player of that calibre for a playoff run. No one cares about actual dollars

Mackey is older than both these guys and hasn’t made the NHL yet..
I’d like to give Valimaki another shot and if Kylington puts in as much work as he did last offseason, he might be in line for another step in his development as well.
I think we keep all 3 and trade an established guy for a forward..?

Yeah, no. People get so focused on the occasional hiccup *that every d-man makes* that they let it jade their view. Same thing happens here with Kylington like it did with Brodie.
This thread is a great explanation.

Hockey is a game of mistakes. They happen to everyone. The underlying numbers tell the true story on net-benefit at the end of the day.
Weegar is a beast.

No kidding, my wife was pissed because she wanted to watch a show and I was like “I have to call my brother, the Flames just got Huberdeau”. Which pissed her off even more because she has no idea who Huberdeau is.

Wow! Is this for real? Holy crap - it is! That's what I'm talking about! Wished it could've happened to get a blockbuster deal done for Gaudreau. Damn, that means no chance of tanking!

Buffalo wished they got even close to that for Eichel.
And our only add is a 4th ?? Lol
Anyhow, since the rebuild is over, I'd really like to see another top 6 forward, preferably of the Center ilk, either through trade or signing.
Sutter is always right, and Mr Sutter says the foundation of your team in Goaltending, Defense and Center. Not 20 million in wingers.

It would be pretty crazy if the flames made a move for Barzal now. Something like:
Florida’s 2025 1st round pick
A top prospect (Coronato/Zary/Wolf)
Valimaki (has to clear waivers this year anyways)
Conditional 2nd round pick (becomes a first if the flames make it to the WCF)
Too much? Too little? No idea really. It doesn’t sound like much when I read it because the islanders wouldn’t get a legit top six forward or top 4 defenseman… basically just magic beans.
Don’t really want to lose him but would probably have to add Dube to the deal. Or have to swap out Dube + the conditional 2nd round pick for Hanifin.

Found this on Reddit in response to a Florida fan who was worried about the trade:
Quote:
Dude I know you just gave up Huberdeau AND Weegar AND a first, but just think about Tkachuk. Think about what he could become. Maybe one day he could be as good as Huberdeau!

Sounds like people who thought Brodie was the worst dman in the league because of similar mistakes

Find me a DMan in the league who doesn’t have this happen to them... especially one whose Norris leading d partner gets a regular season ending injury, and has to cover for him.
Weager is elite, pp leader, hits, moves pucks well

Teams have to make both good short-term moves and good long-term moves to be successful. This might only be good for the short-term, but has decent potential to be BOTH a short and long term good move. Which doesn't happen very often with a trade.

FWIW, I believe Friedman had Weegar on his last two Norris ballots.
Fascinating trade. If Huberdeau does spend time here, perhaps that gives the Flames a good shot a resigning him. Equally important will be resigning Weegar. Looks like the Flames still have cap room as well. The Flames could be better ext year than they were last. What a stunning turn around here.
The pick and prospect are icing on the cake.
Trade reaction at the Athletic have the Flames with Two A+‘s, an A, and an A-.

Was so close to making a parlay bet earlier this season that had Gaudreau going to Columbus, Florida getting Tkachuk and Huberdeau a Flame. But seemed too obvious to actually happen.
