This trade sounds a lot better than it actually looks IMO. It’s basically going all in for 2023 and if after, Huberdeau and Weager decide to test the market, then what did we really get out of it?
Matthew Tkachuk’s (extended) value was off the charts and could’ve kick started badly needed rebuild or at the very least, necessary futures with long shelf lives, potential and team control.
Not a fan of this trade. Too much risk without enough upside.

This is a win now trade, no denying it. But a rebuild really wasn’t in the cards. Edwards wants the Flames to be a playoff team, especially with the arena negotiations likely to resume.
Given that mandate, this is an excellent trade.

I would have traded either Gaudreau or Tkachuk straight up for Huberdeau. Let alone the other significant (not spare) parts.
I am shook.

I guess the biggest question though isn't about the planters themselves, but secondary considerations like age, contracts, etc.

Always wanted Huberdeau but in any life I couldn’t even think of a trade where Florida would let him go without a big overpayment.
Well it happened for a big overpayment, but the other way.

I've been mentally preparing myself for the Flames getting fleeced with a very underwhelming return for Tkachuk.
I was right about the fleecing....just totally wrong on the team tho!
Not a big Tre fan by any means but this is an absolute home run by him here. This organization ain't rebuilding and this is a better trade than I imagined us getting whether they went the rebuild route or not. Totally thought this was fake news when i first heard it.
Most the talk will be around Huberdeau but Weegar is an excellent dman, legit might be the #1 D on this team.
Gotta get him extended before the season because he's gonna put up some killer numbers playing in Sutter's system and being on PP1 here!

He's in contention for best playmaker in the world currently.
This upcoming season is going to be very fascinating on the ice. I can't wait to see how these players gel.
Tanev with Weegar could be an amazing duo.

This is a deal you do if Tkachuk is begging to stay, to do it with a player everyone knows wants out. GMs must have been dumb enough to think he is actually just below McDavid/Matthews

Holy ####. Impressive to pull off Huberdeau in this deal.
Get him re-signed, and it's a big W for the Flames considering the circumstance they were put in.
This move, combined with getting one more top-six forward, actually keeps Flames in the contention window I feel. That's wiggling out of a tight space if Tre can pull it off.

Same age as Gaudreau, who he is replacing, and who everyone was ready to give 10M.
$9.75M (like Gaudreau) seems OK and they can give him 8 years if he really wants, structured for easy buyout. Or give him Tkachuk’s $9.5.

So, is this now Huberdeau's team if he stays?
That must be appealing after being in the shadows for so long in Florida.

He's signed through next deadline so they can offer him an 8 year deal today.

Keep in mind that Hubs and Weegar are signed for this season, so any extensions will only go on the books in 2023 when the Lucic and Monahan contracts will be over.

Something to think about....
The off-season is going terrible, lose Gaudreau, tkachuk wants out...
Suddenly we see the tweet... Our hero Scorch is going to return...
And everything turns around.
All hail Scorch!
