Take a page out of Ottawa’s book and overpay these guys to keep them in the fold - they’re both studs.

Huberdeau replaces Gaudreau, and we swap Tkachuk up front for Weegar at the back end.

The group as it stands isn’t good enough to beat the Avalance or Lightning or Blues, but they are good enough to beat a lot of other teams.

They have lots of prospect capital and picks to work with, plus cap space. Nearly $12M comes off the books between Monahan and Lucic alone next year.

Precisely why I’m confused, short of another significant addition.

My only concern is the Flames not doing that if they're a playoff team. If Huberdeau re-signs, it's a win. If both he and Weegar re-sign it's a massive win. If they don't sign and Treliving has the balls to flip them regardless of the standings then it's potentially another massive win. The only way the Flames lose this is if they get into another "Cup run or bust" mentality and let either of them get to UFA, I just hope getting badly burned by Gaudreau is the last lesson they need there

Just want to say I’ve been harping on the rebuild train since Gaudreau left and I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Even if this season goes astray or you can’t lock up these guys up long term you’re still getting a massive haul for them at the deadline.

Whether you care about rebuilding, going all in, or asset management there is no denying Treliving absolutely crushed this trade.
