You’d think Huberdeau would do the same as Tkachuk and bank on his great season with a team who just traded for him. Who knows what numbers he’ll put up this year.

Weeger will love the D core, goalie, system and Sutter.

IF Huberdeau signs an extension, it becomes a close deal. But you also have to keep in mind that Huberdeau is 29 and statistically speaking has already peaked and can expect a decline in a couple of years.

IF the Flames flip them at the TDL, they can get some decent parts back. But you just know that if the Flames are anywhere near a playoff spot by that time, they will walk them to free agency. Recent history suggests that.

Also, I am not sold on Weegar. I think he is part of the list of players who overachieved in Florida (Duclair, Bennett, Marchment). I recall him being absolute dog #### in the playoffs and Florida fans wanted his head on a pike.

So yeah, a lot of this story still has to be determined, but it has the potential in 2 years to amount to just Shwindt and a lottery protected 2025 first rounder when all is said and done. Hard for me to get excited at this point.
lol closer deal

Flames won the Hamilton trades (both of them), the Neal trade, the Sven trade, maybe the Zadorov trade as well and the first Stone acquisition. The Russell trade too, I guess. And the asset sales of Hudler and Glencross. And trades of picks, etc to get Kylington, Wolf, Dube.

Lost the Hamonic and Bennett trades. Jarnkrok as well, maybe.

TBD: Toffoli, trades of picks re Zary, Lapierre, Poirier

Okay hear me out...

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Monahan
Mangiapane - Kadri - Toffoli
Dube - Backlund - Coleman

If Monahan is truly done, shuffle the wings and Phillips/Ruzicka/Pelletier get their chance in a scoring role

I sympathize with those hoping for a rebuild. Cup teams start on the draft floor, and the Flames have very few drafted players left on the roster. But realistically this team wasn't going to rebuild. No team in the NHL is rebuilding after winning a division and making it to the second round.

Outside of "this isn't a rebuild type trade" there is zero reason not to love this trade. Huberdeau replaces Gaudreau, and this opens the door to signing Kadri or trading a D to replace Tkachuk. All while saving cap space, adding a strong top 4 D, and a couple of futures. It also mixes up a core that couldn't get it done in the playoffs.

Getting older and having two pending UFAs isn't ideal, but no ether was the situation. This is a massive home run for Treliving, and frankly is much better then most were expecting. At a minimum he bought the Flames another legitimate swing next season.

He gave the team a great gift on the way out.

Left with a positive legacy. Thank you Matty - made it a win/win. I’ll be cheering during his return warm up skate.

I still can't believe some posters are seeing this in a negative light. If you don't see this deal as a win nothing this team will ever accomplish will make you happy. Unless this team failing is what makes you happy in which case I truly don't understand.

I was more comfortable with JG at 8 years than MT. He will still mature but MT's antics, though toned down, still didn't do him any favours. His usless 2nd fight against Heskinen killed that top line from its potential the rest of the playoffs. And the last few years he was a lot of talk and not a lot of action, until finding his groove with JG this year.

But, all the best to him. Nice to have him on your side, nice to have some characters on the team as he was and glad he's out of the conference.

Wow this is awesome. I mean.....its awesome.
Let's ####ing GO!!!!!!!!!

Man look at that blue line.....look at those goalies.

I wonder if Darryls doing a little jig right now? Heck I'd love to hear Darryls actual thoughts on this. I mean the guy is pretty stoic but some kind of happiness would be cool.

Treliving making this happen doesn't shock me at all. Let's remember he's done this before In pairs .

Hanifin, Lindholm
Tanev , Markstrom
Weegs, Hubes

I hope hope hope for one more ......Matt Barzal....Kadri.....any good player with some .....wait for it.....truculence!!!

Even better .....the Panthers got bounced hard and those 2 will have taken it very personal and will be out to prove ALLOT!!!

Welcome to the Flames Fellas. Damn Good to have ya.

I couldn’t find anything (ie online or on his social media) that suggests he does. Looks like he’s single, hangs out at home in Quebec during the summer (based on his instagram).

Happy to be corrected.

So many up and down thoughts on this trade, specifically because I don't think the Flames fully know what's next. My thoughts on the players first.
  • Huberdeau - first I was ecstatic but learned he's a UFA. Given the Canadian connection I think they'd be banking on him giving us a chance to sign, probably between now and the deadline. I'm thinking if he's wishy washy or if they're not doing well, they'll try and deal him to a team like Ottawa where they may be done with too many recent 1sts, and may deal their 1st for this upcoming draft
  • Weegar - I like the idea of, "if we can't score, let's prevent the opposing team from scoring". He's a serviceable two way dman, who can be a 3rd best dman on many teams. No idea if he's signed for the long term but in a year where we've lost offence, I have no problem with him being brought in to stop the bleeding and move the puck up at the same time.
  • Schwindt - Who? Who cares.
  • Conditional 2025 pick - It went from looking like a 2023 1st, to 2025 to conditional 2025. This tells me the Flames are looking at re-signing Huberdeau first and foremost, and the pick is conditional on that. Florida got their guy and signed him, and I really wish this was for this year somehow. It's kicking the can so far down the path that it's a little aggravating, knowing this years draft can produce something so fruitful.
Anyway, I think this is a fair deal for Treliving. Not bad, not great, just right. What makes me anxious is what direction they're heading is not fully lit. This deal buys them more time for a guy who probably doesn't hate the team, and will give a fair chance. But it also doesn't give us a coveted 1st for this year. Treliving can't twist anyone's arm to give up that 1st, but if Huberdeau isn't keen on extending, he should be able to get a 1st.

I'm also thinking perhaps Backlund can get a 1st for a team like the Rangers at the deadline. So much TBD. I just hope they don't try to build around Huberdeau because at 29, this is his peak as good as he is. I really like him and his game, but I really want to see a rebuild by maximizing assets and getting young guys to grow together. A lot TBD.
