Arbitration can only mean one thing, war, err contract.

So he has to be traded before the arbitration award or else we get stuck with his 1 year deal that’s less valuable to move because then the acquiring team has to wait till January to extend?

Canadians, Swedes, Finns, Czechs, Slovaks, Swiss, Danes, Norwegians, Frenchmen, Russians, Slovenians, Ukrainians - I’d be looking at all these places ahead of Americans at this point.

How about Brazilians? That's worked out for us in the past.

Nope.

If an American is the best player available you take him - hard stop.

In 2011 the best non-American taken after Gaudreau was Emil Molin

In 2016 the best non-American taken after Tkachuk was Alexander Nylander.

In 2016 the best non-American taken after Fox was Cliff Pu.

Doesn’t matter if the American might leave in UFA or might not sign, in the end if they are the best player you’ll get more value out of them than a bust.

The only reason Robyn Regher wasn't faster was because his ears would make him fly

While I agree with this, another strategy worth considering is moving up or down in the draft via trade if you think your pick will line up such that an American will be the best player available at that time.

Just pick the best player available. They don't need to over think this.

Since he can’t sign a contract , the offers will be even lower.

And sitting him will not increase his value come Jan 1.

The only way the Flames are going to get anything of value is if Tkachuk found a team he likes and signed a long term contract

LOL, can you imagine, "well, this guy is clearly ranked higher, but he's American, and might leave us 7 years later. Let's go for the lower guy just in case the American turns into a superstar while playing for us."

I'd say this will easily be the most valuable asset the Flames have ever traded?

24 year old former 6th overall pick coming off a 42 goal, 104 point season.

Especially if he has provided a few teams that he is willing to sign an 8 year extension with.

Need to plan for when we don’t have a plan to maximize asset value in 7 years. Picking the inferior player may be the best plan given our track record.

100% Just stop trading away all your draft picks so you can at least have some insulation from inevitable departures of top players, which for any team is likely bound to happen at some point. Accumulate draft picks, let your scouting staff which has shown to be quite capable at identifying talent so it’s job, don’t leave yourself in situations where you have to fill important positions with UFAs because you will have to overpay because we are a small market team. Operate as if you are a small market team, because you are.

Listened to the Ryan Leslie interview with Andy Strickland. A lot of rambling company man speak. The man is physically incapable of saying something that makes anyone uncomfortable.

However he thinks Arizona, New Jersey and Boston are three of the teams on Tkachuk's list besides St. Louis.

Arizona? Now their 1st in 2023 is definitely yummy! Even with adding Tkachuk that is still a shot at Bedard.

It would be pretty hilarious if Gaudreau and Tkachuk leave Calgary to go play in Columbus and Arizona.
