Why is this not a deal to the Flames?

You can't just throw a free agent signing into a trade to make it seem palatable.
I'm sure they already regret Gudbranson, but that was done before they thought Johnny was possible. Same with Voracek

I'm sure Jarmo explored all possibilities, including trading Laine instead of signing him (which would have been bad for both his and Tkachuk's trade value). Or Roslovic. Or Nyquist. Or Voracek.

The problem with Nyquist is it would only solve the problem this season, but they'd have no wiggle room until Voracek is done. This also retains the ability to sell Nyquist at TDL.

IMO it would be worse for a rebuilding team to sweeten away a contract. I'm shocked they couldn't get more here, but it's probably the least of all evils.

Doesn't change that the first deal never should have been signed by any team. Ridiculous overpay ... Gudbranson is Columbus' second-highest paid defenceman and they're not getting Darryl Sutter to come with him.

An .878 on ice save percentage at even strength is what happened (.961 PDO is woof).

48% xGF (54 for, 60 against) and 38.5% actual goals for (50 for and 80 against) is how you get to minus 30. Bad team and bad goaltending is not a good combo.

If Wright and Berniers have good rookie years Seattle might be half decent. They were tough to play against just lacked talent to score

Fair. Especially when Colin Miller took 2x1.85.

For a 3rd and a 4th? Quite a trade for Seattle.

Maybe they need the picks to package in another move to dump salary??
Makes no sense otherwise

That’s cheap

Could have helped the Flames if they don’t want to rebuild

Of course Seattle gets Wright and Bjorkstrand basically handed to them.

I think they just acknowledge that they are still rebuilding and don't want to get into a cycle of spending assets for quick fixes.

Rip the band-aid off and take a crappy return that gives you the most flexibility.

I think it's possible that at the next 2 TDLs they can sell each of Voracek and Nyquist for at least a 3rd+4th (presuming retention).

If it would have cost a 3rd+4th to dump Nyquist now. The overall difference would amount to: -2 picks vs. +6 picks...an 8 pick difference.

Columbus farther from the playoffs?

Good.

I would imagine this is the best that they could find around the league to clear his cap hit. I guess Calgary still has to keep their cap space fairly open as offers come in for Tkachuk - you don't want to turn down a much better trade simply because you can't fit the other player in that the team needs to dump.

Columbus over-paid on the market for Gudbranson because they needed to help change their culture. Last season Gudbranson was a bigger part of that culture shift than I think people are perhaps realize.

Also, people laughed and ridiculed Calgary for signing Engelland to that deal. I can definitely see Gudbranson being as valuable to Columbus, and the cap has risen quite a lot too. It is an overpay, but not bad, and there will be value there on the ice and in the room too. Helped them get Johnny I bet.

I hope Calgary is able to 'weaponize' their left-over cap space during the season to take advantage of teams having to dump good players, or overpaid players with picks as compensation. Flames tried to do that one year with Feaster, but Feaster failed to read the market as the compliance buyouts destroyed that market for a few seasons.

Man I would bet we're are near the top of list for Bjorkstrand's 10 team no trade list right now.. I'd imagine probably most players this summer with the state we are currently in.
