I guess we will know in what direction the team will be headed after the Tkachuk trade.
I don't think it will be 'star for star' - it is going to be difficult for Treliving to extract value from only 5 or 6 teams in that scenario. A 'hockey trade' would be tough to accomplish here. I think it is obvious for everyone that the package will be more of the blue-chip young player kind - established or not, with picks.
I am sure after that, then Treliving will hold a media availability, and then we can know what direction the Flames are going to be taken. Right now, we don't know for sure if the Flames are going to compete or retool, or rebuild (probably not rebuild). Treliving could use part or all of those assets and go try to make this team competitive after that. Not out of the question. It would be surprising to me, but not out of the question really if the intent is to try and win a cup with Sutter and the rest of the team.
We can better guess at the direction this team is headed from the trade, and I guess we will know for sure when Treliving tells us. I am really hoping for a tear down - rebuild personally, but at this point, I am open for anything.
In my opinion, a sports team has to be entertaining to have a chance at being successful. The players remaining are hardly garbage, don't get me wrong. There is still a very good supporting cast here. However, Flames lost (or will with Tkachuk) their two stars who were the more entertaining players to watch (especially Gaudreau). Flames can still be entertaining if they are winning, but that has become harder to do for this upcoming season, no matter how you slice it. Impossible? No, but definitely harder.
Hoping for a great return - whatever direction it goes. Flames at least should do a one-year retool I think. Sutter is the wrench in these plans, as I doubt he would want to be a part of this, and if he is a part of this, well, Flames won't be picking too high in the subsequent draft.
|
So play the lottery every year and hope for the best. The Rangers rode elite goaltending this year, remember the Flames beat them twice and rather lopsided at that.

2. Laine - drafted by Winnipeg, now on Columbus

7. Keller - Arizona

9. Sergachev - drafted by Montreal, now on Tampa Bay
10. Jost - drafted by Colorado, now on Minnesota

When i see Juolevi’s name all I could remember is Pierre McGuire creaming over his name every single time he said it. That guy is such a drama queen.

I want this to be done so we can see what the Flames do next. I am not sure it dragging out is a good or bad thing at this point. It could be dragging as teams bid against each other or it could be dragging cause value isn't there.

Tarasenko essentially lost two years of playing time because of the Blues brass insisting that he use an internal doctor for his shoulder surgeries. He had years of pain, and when he finally went outside of the system to get his shoulder fixed, now he is fine. His trade request is pretty justified.

It's actually not dragging out at all.
Deals like this, with contract extensions, are quite complicated.
They take time.

Yup, basically Eichel situation but not the neck. No love lost there.

Not sure why tarasenko is listed in some of the cp trade proposals? He is said to want to be traded out east. I highly doubt he waives for Calgary even if it’s just one year. Not to mention without Johnny or Tkachuk it must look even less appealing.

The party not requesting arbitration gets to pick the term, 1 or 2 years only, in this case Tkachuk, so whatever he picks and if he truly wants to get to UFA, it will only be 1 year for the Flames.

Not sure if brought up before, but I'm curious. What if more players begin demanding trades or advise the team that they won't resign longer deals (Mang). Could a team potentially be in danger of being below the cap floor?
And if so, are they going to be forced to sign average players to big contracts? It seems to me that players jumping ship could really handcuff a team.

Kyrou/Teresenko plus a smart add or two with the cap space have the Flames better not worse.
And 2 firsts in this year's draft plus more cap space next season.

There are enough bad contracts in the league that a team never has to worry about getting to the floor.

I saw a great 3 team deal on Twitter
Tarasenko goes to NYI via Calgary with Calgary retaining 25%
Cal gets Kyrou, Neighbors, STL and NYI 2023 1sts
StL gets Tkachuck

ESPN's Wyshynsky proposes a meh Beauvillier, Wahlstrom, 1st package for Tkachuk and Monahan, but also wonders if a trade around Tkachuk-Barzal could work.
I've wondered this too. NYI could be a dark-horse for Tkachuk. I can see Lou fixating on him and trying to sign Kadri to replace Barzal. If Barzal is willing to extend in Calgary, I might prefer him to Kyrou or Bratt. He would probably also be appealing for ownership/management, too, as he could drive the offense and keep the Flames competitive. Lindholm on Barzal's wing with Backlund as a matchup C would give the Flames incredible c depth.
