Holtz + 1st alone doesn't quite do it (since he's unproven at the NHL level). Bratt is probably preferred as a side piece to a deal for Calgary.

(I'm not really a big Bratt fan. Don't know much about him, his highlights show him to be a bit of a speedster though...but yeah, I don't know much of him).

What is the salary coming back with all of these deals? New Jersey needs to shed players and salary to fit Tkachuk in. This is not going to be just a futures deal. Jersey has to shed the $10M it's going to take to sign Tkachuk.

If it gets to that point, he'd still be ineligible to sign an 8 year contract extension until January 1, 2023 regardless of what team he is on.

One year contracts can't be extended until that date.

So:

Flames can sign Tkachuk to 8 years (and obviously subsequently trade him) up until August 11th. After the hearing starts on that date, the parties will be forced into a one year contract (minimum 9M).

Flames can trade him, but the acquiring team would only be able to sign him to 7 years and, if they don't come to an agreement before then, the August 11th hearing date is still set.

If he makes it to arbitration (or otherwise signs a one year deal for some reason), the earliest he can be extended is January 1st, 2023.

Bratt is kind of like a smoother skating Mangiapane. Great energy and offensive instincts, but also really good with his edges and changes of direction.

He's definitely a good player, which is why I wouldn't expect a high end future (Holtz, Nemec, or Mercer) coming with him if he's coming back.

I'm actually not sure how much of a downgrade he would be on Tkachuk, isolating for linemates and usage

They have $9.6M in cap space with Boqvist, Bratt, and Wood left to sign. Wood and Boqvist won't cost much to sign.

They probably need to shed about $5M of cap...which is why one of Bratt or Hischier would be included in the deal IMO.

My guess is it's structured similar to the Eichel deal, but the Devils might have options on the table.

Pick one of Hischier / Bratt (Tuch)

Pick one of Nemec / Mercer / Holtz (Krebs)

2023 1st (Top 10 protected like the Knights pick was)

2024 2nd (Same as Eichel trade)

Flames send Tkachuk with a contract and a 2024 3rd back the other way.

If Bratt is included - they just need to sign Miles Wood and a minimum guy to fill their roster and then already have $9.6m in cap space (assuming they get rid of one of their goalies or Bernier is unable to play this year).
