Strange argument to say that him wanting out diminishes the return.

There is going to be a bidding war. That increases the return. How do they reporters have a job?

No, the dates aren't assigned randomly. The league and PA alternate assigning each hearing to an available date/time/arbitrator until they've all been scheduled. I'd guess the Flames (and possibly Tkachuk's agent) asked for the latest possible date to give them maximum time to get something done.

Or the flip side of that if a team has excess cap space today, overpay for one year then give him a cheaper long-term deal tomorrow.

That's essentially what Carolina did with Kotkaniemi last year (but they did it to force Montreal to not match the offer sheet), but they had to wait until mid-season before he could sign the 8-year extension, which adds some uncertainty to the situation for both the team and player.

Because the Flames filed for arbitration, they can't walk away from an arbitration award. If it does get to the arbitration hearing, he'd be locked-in to a one-year contract.

a 100 point guy for a 60 point guy and a 40 point guy, plus a first. Flames pay 10 million in salary for those two average players and the Bruins pay 10 million for their one great player. Plus DeBrusk and Hall are both older than Tkachuk so the Flames gain experience. Bruins only get younger and better.

I don't get the "he wants out so he's worth less" thing.
We have him for one more year guaranteed. Whether he wants out is superfluous. He doesn't have to be traded right now.

What does matter is whether he's willing to sign long term wherever he's traded. But as long as it's multiple teams he's willing to sign long term with, the best teams will have to ante up.

Would a move like that be enough to get Treliving fired?

That is why the Flames need to state they are prepared to sign the arbitrator decision and sit on the player. Even if it is a bluff.

To sign an 8 year deal he has to have been on the teams roster prior to the previous trade deadline so he could only sign an 8 year deal with the Flames after January 1 prior to being traded if this goes to arbitration.

Unless that fell by the wayside during a CBA negotiation.

I was wrong and learn from it.

I think if he got traded today, his new team could sign him to an 8 year deal.

After arbitration, it's Jan 1.
