No but 1st round draft picks give you more shots @ a lottery ball.
Of course the team your looking to trade with has to be considered in terms of their 1st pick, someone like NJ has more value to their 1st than say STL.
But the more 1st round picks you have in general the better your odds of getting a top 3 pick lets say. It's all relevant however, as Jiri pointed out in a previous post "its about the quality" not necessarily the pick. If NJ wont give up the 2023 1st then we have to look at a Mercer + Holtz + something.

Lol last possible day sure doesn't feel random. Bratt's arbitration will be a pressure point for New Jersey though

He's incorrect - once Smith & Klefbom go onto LTIR that'll get them up to $6.4M in cap space.

Jan 1 (or around then, has moved around a bit over the covid seasons) is when players who sign an arbitration-awarded contract are eligible to sign an extension. So in this case, if the Flames sign Tkachuk to only the 1year deal assigned by the arbitrator, then trade him, he can't sign an extension right away.
- This is why I think he gets traded before the arbitration date.

Thank you
Why does the CBA limit players from agreeing to an extension with a team they have a contract with already, arbitration or not?
I don't get the value here for either party by saying you can't discuss contracts with your own player

Probably something related to avoiding essentially 9 year deals, or cap circumvention for a cheap 1st year followed right away by a bigger contract behind it... or other scenarios to block GMs from being too creative.

He can sign an 8 year contract today, prior to arbitration.

This could be a sign and trade and that's a bit nuts as it never happens.

The more I think about it the more I am onboard with not rushing a trade. If the Flames are not getting the package they want, tell the suitors that that you are prepared to sit the player into the season, similar to the Buffalo's Eichel situation (except the team will get a healthy Tkachuk). Sitting Tkachuk might expand his list because of the potential of lost earnings, plus the 8th year is still on the table after arbitration. One of the teams may slip out of the gate, lose a player to injury, etc. and will be more willing to give the assets the Flames want. Plus you get to play hardball with a player who has forced your hand.

Tkachuk can agree to-day to an 8-year extension because he's currently under a 3 year contract. Once his arbitration contract gets settled, he won't be able to agree to a longer extension until Jan 1.

No option of that happening once the Flames elected arbitration. He'll have a contract on August 13th at the latest now.
Unless you mean have him sit with a contract and healthy, but not sure how that results in a potential lost of earnings and seems like the worst case unless you're really afraid of seeing Tkachuk play without Gaudreau.

Isn't there an issue with this timeline/scenario?
If they make it to Aug 11, they have to do the arbitration hearing, there'll be an arbitrator's decision which the team has to agree to (and sign him to 1yr), or they turn down the arbitrator's decision, and he becomes a UFA doesn't he?
The only ways he's on a longer deal is if the Flames trade him before the 11th & he signs an extension elsewhere while still an RFA, or they do a sign & trade (which as noted by others is very rare).

If Tkachuk goes there that's probably the structure with a bit more added - but with Ty Smith traded for Marino now it would probably look a bit different.
I don't see the Flames looking for a pure draft capital trade though - they are going to want a young forward that is already an NHLer.
A Kyrou, Bratt, Hischier, type will probably be part of the trade.
|
Unfortunately, I don't see any way that Hischier is the return for Tkachuk. Bratt seems much more likely. He's out of contract, and it would be hard for the Devils to keep him and Tkachuk.
The Flames probably are targeting him as a now piece (bonus that he's swedish) to stop the bleeding. If we get Bratt I can't see high end futures being part of the package too.

Only if the Flames sign him I think. I think other teams can only do 7 and can only sign his next contract Jan 1st if it actually goes to arbitration.

Hischier's also the captain of the team. It's not happening.

This isn't going to August 11th.
I'd say 7 more days max.

yeah I doubt it'll go into August. If Jersey is interested, I'd expect a move quickly too since Bratt has his hearing on August 3.

It was my understanding that the Flames, or whoever hold his rights, would still have the option to an 8th year extension after arbitration, I believe it has been noted as January 1st.
