If NJ was offering for him at the draft, has their offer now gone lower with Tkachuk's announcement he won't re sign?

Good, mid-20s player.
Top tier prospect.
1st round pick.
2nd round pick.
That's the criteria.

Bratt and Holtz from New Jersey
Kyrou and Neighbours from St Louis
adjust picks accordingly.

I think they thought they'd get Gaudreau as well

Why? It's not more likely that the package gets better closer to the deadline. If anything, it limits the options. Focusing in on the "now" of this trade is the least important part. They need to NAIL the prospect acquired. The player we get today isn't going to be better than Tkachuk, or anywhere near as good. The prospect has to be top tier, that's the most important piece in my eyes.
|
All reports out of St Louis are Kyrou isn't on the table. 23 1st and Neighbors equivalent will matched at the draft.

If you get to the trade deadline, it's unlikely Tkachuk signs as part of the deal, he is simply to close to UFA. Unless it's his #1 destination of course.
Tkachuk's value in a trade to Calgary is better today than when his 1-year contract is set.
And if Calgary is playing well, perhaps ownership doesn't want to punt Tkachuk for futures at the deadline?
I doubt Treliving wants to chance that. I know I don't.
I expect he'll be traded before the end of the month.

I agree. The recipe could be:
-A good young NHL player under team control (ex: Bratt/Mercer or Kyrou),
-A prospect coveted by the Flames (ex: Holtz or Neighbours),
-A 1st (preferably in 2023), and
-A 2nd, for
-Tkachuk +
-3rd.

I like Neighbours too much to have him come to a hometown team and deal with that added pressure.

We really shouldn’t be lumping Neighbours in with Holtz. Holtz is a different tier of prospect. He’d be the absolute key to this trade.
Holtz + 2023 1st would be the key pieces from NJD.
Neighbour + 1st? That’s not a very strong offer. If Kyrou isn’t on the table to be added to those pieces, then St. Louis likely doesn’t have what it takes to get this done.

Sincerely think you’re going to be disappointed by the return Treliving gets in return if that is the expectation. Only time will tell though.

People keep throwing out this “unicorn” label and if it boosts his trade value then great, keep doing it. I don’t disagree he has a very unique, highly skilled toolbox and if there was no cap every team in the league would have a roster spot open for him. But there is a cap, he’s not going to sign an extension with any team, and more importantly, how important is having this rare “unicorn” in order to win a Stanley Cup, or even have success in the playoffs? Did Tampa or Colorado need one?

Sounds like the 2 front runners are NJD and STL.
Going to have to be 3+ assets
NJD (pick 3)
Holtz
Mercer
Bratt
Sharangovich
Mukhamadullin
2023 1st round pick
STL
Kyrou is the starting piece
Neighbours
Bolduc
Perunovich (US born player though so I'd steer clear)
2023 1st round pick
Tarasenko (cap dump + trade deadline 1st round pick fodder)

For St. Louis, my proposal would be: Tkachuk + 3rd for Kyrou + Neighbours + 2023 1st + 2nd. And that’s just based on the return for Eichel.

Wing vs. centre is the only problem. Tkachuk will fetch slightly less. Although, that return was in spite of Eichel's health issues, so who knows. Good to hear Tkachuk is highly sought after, should only drive the price up.

Then they don't get Tkachuk. Pretty simple.

The one thing we should keep in mind is when we talk about protected 1sts, that typically means the trading team has the option to keep the next pick and provide the pick from the following year. Though everyone is rightly focused on 2023, what that does create is the opportunity for that pick to be even higher in the future. For instance I think that it worked out really well for the Sens
A protected 1st isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I'd be surprised if we sign Tkachuk to a 1yr deal and he plays here until the deadline.
He has more value to the teams who'd want him to be traded now before he signs, so they can lock him up long term.
I think he's traded before the end of the month.

Don't think it is pick 3 but if it was I would take Mercer, Holtz, Bratt and run.

you're not getting all of Bratt, Holtz and Mercer. I think Bratt + Holtz + a protected 1st would be a decent enough framework to work with.

It’s possible he stays for part of the year, but I think it would be awkward. There’s a significant risk the fans turn on him for announcing he wants out. Would be very awkward if he starts getting booed by the home crowd.
