Part of me wanted to feel bad.for the Flames and you guys. That this was somewhat predictable makes it no less gut wrenching to watch a team lose it's two biggest stars right in the middle of a very open competitive window in a division where there was a lot of opportunity to do damage. I'd be heart broken if Pettersson and Hughes walked themselves to free agency and bolted (which could still happen!). However,

This organization has never once fully committed to a rebuild. It's always been this half-assed combination of dumping first line players for 4th line veterans or lousy no-name prospects and telling the fan base that our goal was to "work hard" and "make the playoffs," in spite of our roster moves...
Like, if we're going to rebuild, then let's actually rebuild. Get draft picks and or REAL prospects. Don't take on any garbage players who are going to drag us kicking and screaming into drafting 13th overall.
This is what I want to hear...
"Look, we're not going to make the playoffs for 5-6 years. In fact, it's not even going to be a goal of our for at least the next 3-4 years. We need to hit the reset button here, and we're going to do it right this time. We're going for prospects and draft picks, and we're going to build this team from the ground up again.
We're not going to plug our roster spots up with middling 3rd and 4th line players. Our draft picks and our prospects are going to play, and if we finish near the bottom for the next few years, then so be it. We're going to stick to our guns and come out of this on the other side with a good, fast, talented team that can compete.
Is losing going to cost us some fans? Probably, but the fans that walk when we're losing are the same ones that will flock when we're winning. They'll come back, but not until we give them a team to come back for."

What the Flames are experiencing right now has traditionally been called the “Alberta Advantage” in political circles in Alberta.

Its rare that a Canuck fan can point and laugh at any other club these days so we'll give it to you.
Just wait till it happens to your team though......
You think Murray Edwards is screaming at Gary Bettman right now?
"Gary you better make ####ing make sure I win that lottery next year. I don't care how. Just make it happen! This league is rigged. I want it rigged in my favor for once."
I think this will start happening to other teams as well and players will be acting more like NBA stars who move around a lot and plot to play with other stars in big markets.
For a small Canadian market team like the Flames this is absolutely terrible and we better build through the draft to have any chance of ever winning a championship again. Even then, you likely lose your superstars after their ELCs so this really could be the death of hope for teams like us.
With the added emphasis on sports gambling, I think being a hockey fan 5-10 years from now is going to be a completely different thing than what we grew up with.

It is way easier to do in the NBA though. Once it starts happening in baseball and football I will get more worried.

Don't be too hard on them. Every single Canadian team has done this. Every one. Not a single Canadian team has ever sat down and done a proper rebuild. Every one has got a few prospects who went straight from the draft to the NHL and started slapping in UFAs and ill-advised trades.
We are literally watching Ottawa do it right now. Instead of another year or two of pain, they went out and started grabbing everything they could. They're still a tire fire from their own blueline in, but #### it they got DeBrincat?

Lol. Canucks will still be behind us next year.

It already happened in hockey when Kariya and Selanne signed in Colorado. It did not work out for them.
Also, American hockey players can EAD. Look at all the Swedes where their big boy pants while playing 2-3 times further from home than Americans are. Do they wine about not getting to see their family? Nope, they don't. They work and make millions of dollars for 7-9 months of the year and then they go back home and chill for the other 3-5 months.
Hopefully what's happened to us with Fox, Gaudreau and Tkachuk sends a message to other Canadian teams to stop drafting US players.

DeBrincat is only a bad move if he does not re-sign. It is not like they signed Myers or Neal.
