Maybe as a cyclist you can explain this to me, since it seemed like I was in the wrong according to the guy.

Downtown, single lane each way, I'm approaching an intersection and about to turn right (but going slowly as there is traffic) on a green. A cyclist comes up the right side of my vehicle and as I'm turning has to swerve around my car to barely avoid me turning into him (he was going straight through the intersection) as I hit the brakes. Of course I got the full middle finger and everything but I was pretty sure I was not the ####### here.

If I'm riding downtown (not in a bike lane) I'm treating myself like part of traffic and sticking to the left if I'm going straight. It seems idiotic to go around vehicles to the right. Y/N?

Did he veer into the crosswalk to take advantage of suddenly being a pedestrian?

He was pretty close, but just swerved around my vehicle and continued on in the street.

I don't race to the line but yeah if I'm there first I might as well go. You guys don't want indecision, right? Or the standoff off everyone waving everyone else.

You got there first because you didn't brake fully.... Had you did, you would have arrived after the other vehicle.

That's not entirely true. I'm anticipating other cars. If I had fully stopped, I still would have been first. But you're right, in some cases, I probably am cheating.

I do the opposite. If approaching where I'm going to stop at the exact second the other car will, I'll slowly crawl an extra few inches and complete stop after the other car does. Then they feel they got there first and go first without doing the stupid standoff.

I way prefer someone being a dick and taking the initiative to just go at 4 way stops. The real torture comes from the starting and stopping from the "you go first" "oh no, you go first" crowd. If those people get pissy that i dont want to play along woth their pointless exersize in politeness, good.

I get drivers up here in the NE pissed off at me as a pedestrian. Traffic rules are barely a suggestion in many cases and I've had too many close calls.

When I am crossing at an intersection - controlled or not - I will stop and make sure I feel it is safe for me to cross before I enter the road.

Drivers think that by them stopping for me, it is safe for me to cross. Sorry buddy, chill out, I will go when I feel it is safe for me, not when you tell me to. Sorry not sorry if that extra 10-20 secionds I took to be aware of my surroundings inconvenienced you

REMINDER: I am partially blind with complete loss of peripheral vision on my left.

He shouldn't have been there. Even more so if you had a signal on.

The gov should just mandate re-testing every 5 years or so. Maybe a bit of driving re-education would help folks out there.

If I am biking and approaching a right-turn lane or see cars turning right, I’ll move over to the left and let the cars do their thing. That’s if cars aren’t whizzing by and I can do it safely. Same if I get to a red light approaching a “must turn right lane”, I’ll straddle the line and let the vehicles by on my right instead of blocking traffic.

The trick is to stay far enough right that you don't have someone pull up to your right who intends to go straight. Then you are trapped between 2 lanes, which is super sketchy when the light goes green.

No, we don't want you to be unpredictable. Some idiot doing a rolling stop and proceeding without the right of way is a perfect example of being unpredictable. Stop it.

You and another car both arrive at an intersection at the exact same time.
1. If the car is to your right, they have the right of way and get to go first. However, if you are turning right then you can proceed at the same time because you aren't impeding their right of way.
2. If the car is to your left, you have the right of way.
3. If the car is immediately across from you, then the vehicle going straight has the right of way. If you are both turning into the same lane, the vehicle making the right hand turn has the right of way -- except where the right turn is a yield, in which case you have a yield and not a stop sign and therefore must yield to all oncoming traffic including those turning left.

This is not rocket science; this is rock-paper-scissors. Vehicle to the right beats vehicle to the left, straight beats left turn, right turn beats left turn. Left turn beats yielding right turn.

I hate that, and it happens constantly at 14 St and 38 Ave / Sifton Blvd. But I would prefer that instead of being a dick that people just learned how to navigate 3 and 4-way stops (also T-intersections where two directions have a stop and the intersecting road has right-of-way, like Peacekeepers Way SW / Peacekeepers Drive SW).

Were you turning from the curb lane or were you turning across the curb lane from the traffic lane?

If you were in the curb lane and turning properly, he should have passed you on the left because you're no longer a part of the flow of traffic and he is. If you were turning from the traffic lane, with a curb lane between you and the curb, he would have no reason to think you were making a turn there (even if you were signaling - because a lot of idiots signal when they're planning on turning) and passing on the right would make sense.

I've noticed an increase in recent years of people making right turns from the traffic lane rather than properly pulling over into the curb lane and it annoys me so much.

That's a good point. A cyclist still shouldn't be there, but if Pepsifree had been far enough over to turn, there should not have been room for the cyclist to be where he was.
