We should have a poll on what we think will happen.
1. Tkachuk gets to arbitration hearing and therefore awarded with a one year deal.
2. Gets traded before arbitration hearing.
3. Signs a short term deal, 2-5 years.
4. Signs a long term deal, 6-8 years.
Getting traded would be my vote.

3 would be best but I doubt he would go for that

If they trade him I hope it's with the Devils. They really need a player like him and have great assets. They are also in a position to add and compete which gives them a good chance to sign him

This was happening because of the house of cards Treliving had set up. There was no foundation to it, so all it took was one card being pulled to see the collapse begin. Worse, Treliving gave the remainder of the deck of cards away over the year trying to fortify the house, which just became that much more unstable. I understand what he tried to do, but it was too late in the game was unlikely to change what had already been set in motion. A major tear down is coming, and Brad Treliving should not be involved in the rebuild that comes with it.

We all saw it coming, because it was an obvious risk. Gaudreau and Tkachuk were both upcoming UFAs, who are American and have strong ties to their respective home areas.
With what's going on with Tkachuk, that should show you how limited the options were with Gaudreau a year ago. Tkachuk is currently coming of a 100 point season, is 24, and has the physical presence most teams covet. Moving him for a massive haul isn't so simple.
Last off-season, Gaudreau was coming off back to back sub-par seasons, is tiny, was turning 28, and everyone knew he might run back to the east. The return on him wouldn't have been that great. So management has to decide between getting a poor return for their franchise player or letting Sutter do his thing. They let Sutter do his thing.
It never was the best situation, and after two years of poor play by the Flames, all the options were bad.

I'm not as negative as Tkachuk signing as most. And I don't really see what opting for arbitration does in terms of meaning he's going to be traded.
You can trade him this week if you need to. Not sure what an extra 2 weeks does for you in terms of a trade.
Obviously Boomer has more insight than me. But I don't see what giving yourself an extra 2-4 weeks does for you in terms of a trade. Just pushes the deadline forward - I don't think anyone is going to offer any more if you have a deadline of this week vs 3 weeks.

6 year deal or trade is my guess. No way it gets to arbitration

You missed a very likely one: he signs a one year deal prior to arbitration.

Tkachuk has a very large incentive to sign his big deal in this offseason, so that should help Treliving in finding a partner.

I'm still leaning to Tkachuk signing long term with the Flames based on end of season press conference and him saying explicitly he'd be very open to signing here long term. I understand that this was before the Flames lost Johnny but I actually feel Tkachuk might be the kind of player to feel that while Johnny's a great player and was a big part of success, that he believes in himself and his abilities enough that he feels he doesn't need Johnny to be a top player and actually enjoys the challenge of proving it. We'll see!

FOI is a big vibe killer this offseason.
Hope that turns around... need some damn extensions here. Not really up for the wait out the other party game for every contract that needs to get done. Find some common ground and hammer it out Flames.
Lots of cap to play with now without John.

He's dumb if he doesn't at least consider it. He's coming off a 100 point season. The playmaker who helped him get there is gone. His odds of repeating that this season are lower.
The hold up now could just as easily be Tkachuk demanding $10+ x 8 years million and the team trying to talk him down.

then there has to be a 100% chance of trading him. Everything else would be madness after what just happened with Gaudreau.

If the 2nd overall pick was indeed on the table, we already missed the best return possible.

What about something in the realm of 2-3 years? Or is that considered long term.

That’s the problem with this situation. Whether Tkachuk wants to stay on Calgary or not I doubt he sign more than 5 years with anyone.
At age 28/29 even without ever getting 100 points in a season again he probably gets a better AAV in 5 years than he does now. I’d sign 4 then 7 or 8 years and get an average of. $11 mil per year for 11 or 12 years if I was him

Can't believe American players are the new Russian players. This is ridiculous.
There won't be restrictions like we saw in 2020-2021 again.
Draft native swedes, finns and Canadians only from this point forward!

Tkachuk will get a long term deal this off season IMO, it just won't be with Calgary.
I'd imagine he's already expressed his desire to move on, at least he knows what he wants and isn't stringing us along like the wet noodle did.
