No wonder the fire Tre crowd won't shut up if this is the type of thing they expect him to be able to do.

Brad could trade Tkachuk for Klim Kostin and Jake Neighbors and there would be folks who said he won the deal.

Yes, he should be fired for his record after 8 yrs and the state of the team currently.
Show me the results that justify his job

Well, it looks like the Flames could get dragged kicking and screaming into a rebuild, the best option for possible future contention.
Whether they lean into the circumstances and accumulate as many futures as possible to set themselves up for future contention or whether they try to get "win now" pieces back for Tkachuk, blow large contracts for Kadri and Klingberg, and continue to spin tires in the mud remains to be seen.

What a gut punch this offseason is.

That's not true. This is magnified because it's happening to two players in succession but I think fans should remember that we have discussed the future of Gaudreau and Tkachuck for years now as both of them leaving was always a high possibility. Heck the moment Tkachuk was drafted the clock was always ticking on him remaining in Canada. The Flames issues are more Canada than Calgary. Vancouver is also likely going to have to trade Miller who is an American born player. I would expect Austin Matthews will likely leave the Leafs for an American team.

Many UFAs are able to sign new contracts within hours of free agency….
If Matthew wants to return to the Flames then the extension should be able to be done this week.
Of course we do not see what goes on in the negotiations behind closed doors, but no reason for this to be delayed.

It's not what he has to do to save his job, it's what he's done that should result in him being fired. All of this was predictable. ALL of it. There have been a few of us on this site - labeled the "chicken littles" or the "doom and gloomers" - who saw this all developing into the very ugly situation it has become. This was happening because of the house of cards Treliving had set up. There was no foundation to it, so all it took was one card being pulled to see the collapse begin. Worse, Treliving gave the remainder of the deck of cards away over the year trying to fortify the house, which just became that much more unstable. I understand what he tried to do, but it was too late in the game was unlikely to change what had already been set in motion. A major tear down is coming, and Brad Treliving should not be involved in the rebuild that comes with it.

This problem will become more and more magnified as the NHL player pool becomes more and more American.
The task for Canadian teams and GMs will be to extract as much value as they can on American players by assessing their intents early and making proactive moves instead of hamstringing themselves with reactive moves and contracts like BT did.

If the Flames were a true contender I don't think guys would leave. Vancouver is a very nice city and I bet guys would enjoy playing there if the team had a shot to win. Leafs probably have the best chance but they keep underachieving. I don't think Canadian cities are at the top of most guys lists but the only way to keep them is building an undeniable team they want to be a part of. Playing on a middle of the road team in Calgary isn't that enticing.

I think the top 2 spots would be New Jersey or St.Louis. The Jersey GM is a family member of Tkachuk and he is right with Hughes. St.Louis is obviously home.
Blues won’t be trading Thomas who just inked an 8 year extension last week. Kyrou definitely would be a piece that would be included. The Blues could ship Tarasenko to the Islanders to free up space or include O’Rielly in the deal since he has no trade protection and is in the last year of his contract. It also opens up the C for the Blues who may want to give that to Tkachuk. The Devils would likely include their own RFA headache in the deal in Bratt plus some of their rosiest capital. I wonder if there would be a chance if they would send their captain here as Hischier would be a nice get for Calgary. Hischier+Bratt for Tkachuk+Monahan/Backlund?
|
Kyrou was on the 2018 WJHC team. Just sayin’.

Flames were a true contender this season and it didn't stop Gaudreau or Tkachuk from wanting out.

Yeah, built a team that has put up 106 and 111 points in the last two COVID uninterrupted full NHL seasons and he's learned from his mistakes it would appear, also drafted very well.
I'd rather not start over with a new GM, this one is really good aside from his first coaching hire that unfortunately cost us a couple key seasons.

It is 100% his fault .
Whether or not you agree with the gamble and asset management is a different question
It can be his fault and been a good gamble .
That’s what his bosses will decide (and I’m sure were part of the decisions)

No, it's not his fault that a couple of American stars want out of Canada

Agree Ottawa is unlikely. NJD a player for sure, can see NYI and PHI as options too. I don’t think you’d get a good deal from StL as they know Matthew wants to be there, don’t see the urgency from stl as much as the other teams. Philly and Nyi under pressure to do something big this off season after missing playoffs. NJD left at altar by Johnny. Problem is that Miller is out there too and imagine these teams are going back and forth between Calgary and Vancouver trying to find the best deal. Deadlines create pressure points and Treliving is more under the gun than Canucks and Miller. Hope we get news sooner rather than later so the roster for the upcoming season can be finalized and go into a season distraction free for the first time in a long time.

If you look back a few seasons ago where there was a culture problem in the room, those things shouldn’t happen and that was 100% on management. People can point to the building and all that but they’re not playing in a barn. It’s likely a culture problem where management puts their head in the sand. Additionally the American players probably just want to be home, and with Gaudreau leaving it probably sets those wheels more in motion.

Can’t paint all Americans with same brush. Can see in general east coasters less amenable to coming here and Midwesterner’s more agreeable to Calgary. We signed Blake Coleman and more recently Kevin Rooney who is from Mass (the former probably had us team options, not sure about Rooney). Hope we did our due diligence on Coranato and we don’t have an issue with him. Have to think that comes up in draft interviews nowadays.

Yup. I wonder more and more about the culture in the room. All year it was talk about how tight they were. Not really seeming that way now.

^ Not true. Zadorov spoke glowingly about the team. Might just be that a few either needed to make a change or just wanted to. Doesn't mean they weren't tight or that the remaining players aren't.
