First off, every chance I have to criticize Treliving amounts to one specific situation. His handling of Gaudreau during the most important off season in the last decade. I’d be curious if you can point out other criticisms before that.
This I’m ambivalent on. He’s already messed up this off-season, I could be persuaded either way that this was the right decision or not and it will pretty much be whether or not it gets to arbitration, but there’s pros and cons both way. Just feels like rearranging decks on the titanic. Maybe they do look better in the ballroom, but I’m more worried about that ice berg.
Also it’s next draft, you know the one Chicago is going try to build their next dynasty with, that I was talking about.

The only benefit is time they get to extend negotiations. There's no benefit for Tkachuk to sign until the arbiter awards him more than $9M qualifying offer.

Sure there is. The Flames could offer more for year 1 of a long term deal than he thinks the arbitrator will award for year 1. And offer hefty signing bonus and structure so he makes more up front.

I don’t think anyone has Wright pegged as a franchise guy anymore. Top line C though, sure, but it’s easier to fall short of your potential than meet it or surpass it.
Would rather focus on 2023 if we’re going to start gaining picks instead of forcing the issue and trying to make magic out of whatever we could have gotten at the 2022 draft.

This is where you're wrong. If Tkachuk wants to cash in on his 104-point season with a long-term deal, he now has to sign before arbitration. He can't just hold out for a better number.

I'd rather him sign a one year deal than trade him before.
Retain half and let's go. No reason a team would pay more unsigned than on a one year deal. He could just go to arbitration with them as well.

Which lottery teams are going to give up their picks for him?

No, this is where you are wrong. Tkachuk has an immediate built-in excuse for any drop in production - the Flames allowed Johnny Hockey to walk for free and did not replace him with competent NHL talent. Some team will be dumb enough to bite on that and pay him for that 104 point season from the past. Just look at what he can do with first line time and top end talent! Someone will look at the circumstances of the broken up 1st line and pay the man his money.

The other issue surrounding the 2023 draft is that lower performing teams are going to be more reticent than ever to give up first rounders. So all this 'just ship him for a first' isn't super realistic considering the teams that have the cap space to sign a Tkachuk.

Common sense. It's the NHL. Someone is always willing to over-pay.

Yeah that’s what I have been saying. Tkachuk can have a bad year and it’s the Flames fault not him.

None. Any team with space isn’t giving up 4 firsts
The Flames also didn’t do this right after they offered the QO. It’s been over a week since they issued it so why now? I’m thinking it isn’t going well and there was a threat he might take QO. They have more time to talk or explore best trade options but I’m thinking he’s gone this summer

Ya someone will pay him for that reason. Christ he put up 77 points in 80 games playing with Backlund and Frolik. Tkachuk is getting paid no matter how he plays this out.

So your arbitrary deadline to sign Tkachuk to 8 years or trade him was… next draft? That makes even less sense.
I don’t know any other criticisms, don’t really remember any of your posts outside today, that was just something you said.

Funny thing about lottery teams is you don’t know who all of them are one year out.
If you can get some assets for him, including a first rounder, that opens up the opportunity to move up in the draft depending on which teams are around the top.

The contenders don’t have lottery picks or blue chips
We’ll get some packages similar to Iginla’s

No. This previous draft they should have known if Gaudreau was signing or not. When they confirmed he wasn’t, they should have gone into the rebuild during the draft and this off-season to gut the team so they could give them best chance to win the lottery that they could.
Chicago traded all their players this off-season so next off-season they will be drafting high.
Gaudreau isn’t signed so he’s gone, trade Tkachuk to NJ for that 2nd overall, find a spot for Markstrom, trade for Mrazek to recoup a first round pick in 2022, so they draft 2nd and 25th, then go into this season with no hope of competing giving them the best chance possible to draft a franchise player next season. Like Chicago did.
Right now I feel like they are positioning themselves to finish 16th-ish overall, draft middle, miss out on a franchise player in a top heavy draft, and lose their two best players in consecutive years. Darkest timeline, no?

Flames have a lot farther to fall than Chicago. Getting to bottom three would require more than punting Tkachuk and Markstrom.
