Or make a trade or have a contract imposed, which then gives them another year to make a trade or a long term signing.

And that's exactly what should have been done at the draft.

LOL. This last draft? OK. They can still do it before next draft, which is better.

No, arbitration starts July 27th. It goes until August 11th but I assume dates are random? Alphabetical order?
Once the hearing starts, since the new MoU, there is no negotiating after the hearing starts so could be as early as 9 days to work something out.

And neither Gaudreau nor Gross had any reason to care about that. So they had no reason to accommodate the Flames if they had set such a deadline. They were free to ignore it completely.

But it wasn't a deadline, because Gaudreau's position was exactly the same after the draft as before. If it isn't a deadline, it doesn't serve the purpose of a deadline.

July 29th deadline instead of July 22nd doesn’t do much for the Flames with Tkachuk.

It does a great deal, because it is binding on both sides.
Before the arbitration was filed, Tkachuk had all the leverage: he could sign his QO and walk straight to free agency next summer. If he chose not to walk, he would have the option of dragging out the negotiations as long as he chose, knowing that if he holds out, it will hurt the team more than it hurts him. That weapon is now out of his hands.
One way or another, Tkachuk will have a contract after the arbitration hearing. If he has any interest at all in cashing in after his 104-point season, he's on the clock just as much as the Flames are.

If Treliving trades Gaudreau at the next draft even I’ll admit he’s a wizard…

We are now talking about Tkachuk. Trading Gaudreau at the draft would have gotten almost nothing. Neither of the only two interested teams needed to give up anything.

We could have walked away with a potential franchise center in Wright. We don't have any idea what we might get in a deal before the season starts. Odds are its going to be a for a prospect, a 1st, and a player with salary implications. So if we use St. Louis as an example, Neighbors, Tarasenko, and their 1st rounder (late 1st).

Arbritation forces a signed contract.
No months of waiting for it to get done. It is just done.
Is that good or bad? Who knows.
Tkachuk signs or is playing in europe next season. The Flames still own his rights.
I still love the drama.

I would be more than willing to give Treliving the year after he leaves. First year of any GM they are almost always operating with the team the previous GM had. I don’t think Raymond, Englland and Hillier out the Flames over the top in 2015.

We heard Brady Tkachuk was the more loyal or “nicer” of the Tkachuk family. He got $8.206Mx7 years averaging 0.63ppg never scoring more than 22 goals or 45pts in a season. His averages per 82 games was 25 goals and 52pts.
Matthew Tkachuk is coming off a 104pt and 42 goal season. Career averages of 29 goals and 73pts per 82 games with 3 more seasons under his belt. I think he is going to try and push for something in the high 11’s or even low 12’s to sign with Calgary long term. If he doesn’t get appropriately overpaid he will walk to free agency and the team of his choice.

I thought he also meant that Tkachuk should have been given the same deadline and traded. Because there’s pretty much zero trade available for Gaudreau at the draft. Keeping in mind (a) his list; (b) his potential salary and the room needed; and (c) the end result.

That's assuming that New Jersey was going to trade the 2nd overall straight up for Tkachuk, which, as far as I know, was never reported. They were said to be discussing trading that pick to several teams. We have no way of knowing at this point which team would have given them the best offer, or what that offer would have looked like. All we know is that nobody gave them an offer they were willing to take.
For all we know, they were asking Tkachuk++ for the pick.

They don't make the playoffs without Hiller, not even close

If the guy doesn't want to stay in Calgary long term, the Flames should work out a trade this summer and let him go where he wants. Nobody should be forced to play anywhere they don't want to be. I don't understand how a draft is even legal.

Depends on the contract but no, because I don’t think this is a position the Flames should have been in.
