Dubois agent came out and said he player wants to play for the Habs. He felt he could say that because he is a free agent albeit restricted.
Jets want a player the Habs won’t move in return so I assume it is Suzuki.
I imagine the Habs would have Dvorak+++ on the table for Dubois but assume Suzuki, Caufield, and Slafkovsky would be off the table no doubt.

What are the Flames adding to Monahan for value and dumping his contract?
Good assets + Monahan

Klingberg’s PPG the last three years
0.55 - also 0.81 PPG in 26 playoff games
0.68
0.64
Possession stats are all outstanding.
The -10, -15, -28 trend is concerning.

As per the Article - The Stars allowed 0.35 more expected goals against per 60 with Klingberg on the ice compared to off the ice last season and a lot of those ended up in the back of the net. For three straight seasons, the Stars have performed better with Klingberg on the bench and he’s been outscored every season. So it would seem he's a beneficiary of their system and his partner but not really the one driving the bus.

This article makes it seem like Bowness’s system was as much to blame for his supposed decline than anything.
At this point, I’ll be fine if they do or don’t sign him, but of all the notable names left, he’s the only one who appeals to me.

Since Monny has negative value to any team, the + is greater than if you didn't include Monny.
Calgary can use a 2nd line centre, is anyone pencilling him in here?

With this group of FAs potentially available I think it would be silly to use significant cap space on Klingberg. Save the space for one of those rare opportunities when elite players become available either via trade or free agency.
Klingberg seems like too high of a risk of becoming a boat anchor contract. At a short term, low cap hit contract sure, but I doubt he will end up signing at a bargain price.

It always looks great being practically a year out. Most of these players will re-sign with their respective teams. The talent available in the UFA crop next off-season will most assuredly be much worse than it appears today.

Of that group though you have to assess which you think will hit free agency and of the remaining group which you have a chance to sign.
Mackinnon will re-sign with the Avs
Kane/Toews will sign with a contender
O'Reilly either goes to St. Louis or signs with a contender. Then again, he DID sign with the Flames once upon a time. So....
Patches: Meh.
Pasta: Interesting for sure.
Larkin: Yzerman won't let him go.
Meier: Interesting
Huberdeau: re-signs with Florida
Horvat: Migration from Vancouver continues to Calgary?
Of the group I would say the Flames realistic targets would be O'Reilly, JVR, Meier, and Horvat.

Horvat is one of those "likely retires a Canuck or retires after a small spin else where" a la Naslund or Sundin. By all accounts, his extension is all but done.

Of course, but unexpected opportunities always arise and Klingberg just doesn’t seem worth potentially taking those away. Team altering players like Eichel, Joe Thornton, Seguin, and O’Reilly, and to a lesser extent Elias Lindholm, Mark Stone etc are moved infrequently but it happens almost yearly. Wait for an opportunity and take advantage of it.

Can't quote your post Jake:
For the UFA players - we know already most will re-sign. Of the very few that don't, Calgary probably won't be on the short-list unless they are offering a lot more money - and even then, we have had FAs turn Calgary down when Calgary offered the most.
So the other avenue of taking advantage of the market is through trade - you mentioned Eichel, Thornton, Sequin, O'Reilly, Lindholm and Stone. In all of these cases I believe (going off by memory) some cap went the other way. All these players had significant cap moving the other way, whether they were 'hockey trades' or for futures. There is always cap moving around in trades.
Feaster left cap room open and declared Calgary "Open for Business", and what did Calgary do? Basically nothing.
If the Flames are competing, they need to build the best team that they can this year. Next year things may again look drastically different and you can't keep from building the best team you can today because a talented player MAY become available next year.
Now, if the Flames are rebuilding, sure, they have the luxury of waiting - but then those trades may not make sense unless it is a 'hockey trade' rather than a futures dump.
I am not saying Klingberg should be signed here (though I really think Calgary is unquestionably missing that #1 offensive puckmoving/ppQB defencemen). I would hope that the Flames look at him, and if they decide he is a fit, to sign him rather than to keep that cap-space open all season 'just in case someone becomes available in a situation where the other team can't take back any cap'.
This is a different conversation if what you are trying to say is: "I think Klingberg's contract will be an anchor". Then yes, I hope that Calgary does not sign Klingberg. But if the choice is between signing Klingberg (if the Flames think he upgrades this team and his contract makes sense) vs waiting and seeing what happens, I will pick Klingberg every time, as long as the goal is to compete.

I guess we just have different philosophies over how the team should go forward. I would rather be patient for other opportunities than jump at Klingberg just because he is available now. Feaster was one of the worst GMs in Flames history in my opinion, so don’t think that situation is comparable.
But I’m sure we can agree on that it mostly simply depends on Klingbergs contract demands. I think the contract he ends up getting would reduce the Flames’ flexibility, which is more important to me long term than adding a decent offensive defenseman that allows more goals than he scores.

If we end up losing Tkachuk along with Gaudreau, I really hope the flames are not offering a long term contract to Kadri, that is if they are offering anything to him.

If they trade Tkachuk for futures after losing Gaudreau for nothing, I don't think it will matter what they are offering Kadri. Flames are already a very unappealing free agent destination.

Kadri wants to go to a contender. If Tkachuk is traded I think it's safe to say that the Flames won't be considered.

None of those players at various states in their career is really going to move the needle for the Flames. Without Tkachuk and Gaudreau this team is moving into rebuild territory whether they like it or not.
