Tkachuk’s camp could do nothing and he’ll be awarded 9M by the arbitrator. Literally not show up.

Not sure if it forces negotiations if he wasn’t having them. It may have given them more time to negotiate, which is the only potential positive of this situation.

Buys them some more time to trade him to a team if he doesn't want long term I guess

Brady’s holdout cost him a couple games. But you also miss out on training camp and the team doesn’t come out firing right away. Especially a team with a major change like losing Gaudreau requiring new line combinations. Of course the player can take some time to find their footing too.

Worst case scenario for the Flames is Tkachuk sucking and leaving next year, I guess this limits Tkachuk sucking because he missed out on pre-season.
My guess is the Flames weren't afraid of anything except for the potential of a one-year offer sheet just below the four 1st round picks threshold ($10.5MM)

I think it's 99% likely he walks to UFA.

Odd circumstances for him though, if he's a UFA now, a lot of teams have spent what they'd planned to, signing him to the deal he wants may take some maneuvering.

The loss of Gaudreau is a built-in excuse for any decrease in production. His agent will point to this past season as what he can do with elite talent and someone will pay the piper.

Tkachuk made 9 million dollars last year, so if they 85% rule if accurate that would be 7.65 million.

Isn’t this just about having more time to negotiate? What am I missing?

Exactly, gives the Flames a little more control but this doesn't really give me much hope he is signing here. Another Gaudreau domino if the rumors were true he would have signed if Gaudreau did.

Doesn't this mean if an arbitrator decides on say a $9.5mil deal, since it was the team that filed for arbitration, Tkachuk's side would have to accept, and if he doesn't then he's a UFA? (basically the same as player filed arbitration, but from the other party)

Pretty sure this just buys them negotiating time at the cost of leverage.

Tkachuk has no choice but to accept.

No I don’t think so. He can’t become a ufa this summer

I thought only teams could walk if it was x% more than the QO

It's binding, you cannot "walk away".

Why would that be?

A team would be nuts to give up those assets for only one year of guaranteed Tkachuk, but even if they did offer him 10M, the Flames match and they’re pretty much at this exact spot where the arbitrator can award anywhere from 9M (minimum) to much more.

Except now if they go to arbitration it’s all about how much Tkachuk sucks because that’s how a team needs to approach arbitration and why everyone hates it.

I don't see giving the player a one year deal as a win for the team. Just like if he accepted the qo, he walks right to free agency in a year. Team needs him signed long term or traded.

Players cannot walk away from arbitration awards, only teams can if it is player initiated.
