I really doubt he would do that but the team would in a heartbeat I think.

I'd try it on if I was the team. Pretty hard to turn down $40M guaranteed. Especially if you offer a big chunk in signing bonus. Suddenly you are very very wealthy, after years of toiling for small contracts. Also avoids the negotiation every couple years which players just hate. and the arbitration which they hate more.

I think you’re looking at 7 years if you’re shooting for a 40mish deal. 5.71m would be a steal in a few years. Give Mangiapane more ice time and you see a potential star. With Johnny gone he may very well be able to show us a 40 goal season.

That said, Mang is an advanced stats darling, plays a solid 200ft game, and gives you his absolute all every shift. His likely expanded role will likely lead to higher production this upcoming season.

It's true that Mangi's goals will probably regress next season. However, I think Mangi is a player that finds multiple ways to impact games. He's a player that's always in the middle of it, always around the puck. He can be just as impactful, if not more, even if his goal total falls back down.
In my opinion Mangi is a player that we should see more playmaking from now that Johnny is gone. Barring he actually signs and doesn't get traded.

At the same time he will become a focus of the other team similar to Johnny was. I think in some ways his number will get better but I'm not thinking he is a star. He's still not Johnny good and can he produce when facing guys like Hedman, Makar and other elite dmen?
Guys like Stone checking him every time he touches the puck. Great opportunity for him but he's not Johnny. Doesn't have his vision.

Love Mangiapane, I hope we do get him signed long term, but I think this is a shot in the face to the club.

In 2018-19, Tkachuk's top ES opposition was MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rakell, Boeser, Horvat, P. Kane, Pavelski, E. Kane, Kopitar, Reilly, Marchessault, and Karlsson.
...and he still put up 77pts alongside Backlund and Frolik
He'll definitely be PPG with Lindholm and Mangiapane/Toffoli,

First off, please don't get upset, this is an honest question, because I don't fully understand how contract goes.
You are saying if we want to sign Mang @ 40ish deal, he will only want to sign for 7 years, but the max the Flames can sign him for is 8 years right? So, just one less year? Or I'm totally misunderstood.

He’s talking about Mangiapane, not Tkachuk.

I’m saying there’s no way he signs a 5m AAV if the term is longer than 5 years. 5m at 8 years like people are saying is a pipe dream. He knows what he’s worth and making it known to Calgary, especially with Gaudreau gone. That’s just my opinion though.

They should trade Mangi as well
I can’t imagine if Mangi is the main guy and team focus on shutting him down
I mean I like him but what’s the point. Rebuild

this 100%. i thought the answers winter gave were insightful and not full of open ended cliches.
i was hoping that perhaps francis would have asked him a bit on how much conversation there is between teams and agents prior to UFA deadline day.

I’ve heard the same from other sources. This seems a tough one for fans to get their heads around, but the truth is most NHL players aren’t fans. Players don’t follow the league standings closely, know rosters and lines by heart, follow prospects, or pay much attention to projections. Playing hockey is their job, and all the normal features of a job - how much they’re paid, what city they move to, their personal relationship with colleagues and managers - matter more than the competitive landscape.

Keeping it under $5 million AAV is very unlikely
You can't have unrealistic expectations and then get mad when they don't come true lol

I think they sort of follow really good players and are impressed by them. But they don’t follow advanced stats or look at team building and strategy like fans for sure. For example, I bet the average NHL player thinks more highly of McDavid than most fans - they see a super talented guy, we see a guy who hasn’t done what needs to be done to win.
