I wonder if Kadri will be in a similar position to Taylor Hall where he expected a big UFA contract but teams were hesitant in signing him long-term so he signed a one year contract with the Sabres (and then sucked and was traded to Boston).
Hall was younger though and a one year contract made much more sense.

I think he is waiting on the Avs to clear salary and if they don't teams like the Flames are waiting in the wings.

The Canucks haven't over played anything. The team doesn't want to move Miller. They just will if they don't have a choice (Avoid a JG/Tkachuk situation). The issue isn't dollar amount per year. It's length of contract. Miller wants 7/8. The team, rightfully, does not want to give him 8. If they can get to a point where he's happy with five or six a deal gets done.
As of right now, the team has stated both themselves and through their usual media lackeys that there is no rush to trade Miller. The urgency to make a trade is only with the fans, not management. They are not "past waiting for a perfect deal" so much as if they do trade Miller before the season starts it will only be "for the perfect deal". If team's aren't going to offer what they're looking for (cheap, young RHD) then they'll keep him until he's signed or the dead line. The trade has to be one they can't say no too. If there was an urgency to trade him they would be letting other teams talk extensions with him.

Even if they make space this year, Colorado will need to sign MacKinnon and Byram next year, Toews the year after that. Johnson's 6M will be off the books but it's not enough.
I think Kadri should see the writing on the wall when Nichushkin and Lehkonen (RFA) were signed before him.
Makar, Toews, Byram and now Manson might be a top 4 they are comfortable going with making Girard expandable to sign Kadri, but unless they get an amazing return I just think sticking with Girard would be the better alternative.
I do agree with you that it's very likely Kadri is hoping they do, but it's probably less likely that Colorado is looking to move mountains to re-sign him.

I think Vancouver will challenge for a playoff position this year. Under Boudreau they were a completely different team and they have a solid collection of forwards. If they get good goaltending from Demko, no reason they can't be a wildcard team.

If I am the Flames I sign my RFA and nothing else. Next year when Lucic and Monahan come off the books gives you much more cap to chase after help via UFA. I mean what's left, you can overpay for Kadri? No thanks, wait until next year when you have more financial flexibility.

I think Miller goes regardless of position if the team gets to the TDL and he's un-signed.
He can just get you a lot of assets on the way out the door and is a few years too old for the rest of the team's ages.

Teams that will overpay for him. I don't actually want the Flames to sign him as the contract will be dumb if they do

I couldn’t agree more. It’s hard to be patient but if the RFAs sign this team is still pretty young and things could look a lot better if we played guys like Pelletier Mackey Ruzicka Phillips next year. No matter where you finish in the standings having a year to see what you have and crap contracts coming off the books can change the outlook in 1 year especially with next draft supposedly being very strong
Finish bottom 5 - getting a star player in draft more than likely sold assets at trade deadline and should be in position to have huge cap space
Finish bottom 6 - 10 - still adding a high prospect and likely still an 80 point team. Sold at trade deadline should have huge cap space
Finish bottom 11 - 16. Just missed playoffs. Doubt you traded assets for rentals. Adding big cap space and probably a 90 point team. Really not terrible minus Johnny.
Make playoffs - if they are still a playoff team minus Johnny then something went right. Still have huge cap space but minus Johnny long term huge contract til he’s 37. Losing the risky deal and still winning would a good situation to be in long term especially doing it with the kids on the roster with room to grow

To be fair he did say he didn't want to leave Toronto also Calgary is probably the best team in a position to give him the money he wants
we can debate if they should but they probably could if the Avs can't make it work
I think Kadri 7x7 will age better than Gaudreau 8 x 10.5 but that's just me
Kadri is a better playoff player for sure (when not getting suspended)

Rumor from 2 different media outlets/media members suggesting Kessel is happy with signing a 1 year deal for cheap (around 1-1.5 M) to sign with a contender.

If they get Chucky signed and any of Miller, Kadri or even Nino they probably can still be a pretty decent team. It may not be that bad. They really need to give Phillips a long look this year in camp to, not just Pelletier and Ruzikca. The guy has put in his time imo. You never know maybe you can even flip Bread for asset mgmt purposes later on if it works out.

Think Canucks would have any interest in a deal based around Rasmus Andersson?

Is JT Miller going to commit 8 years to the Flames? I’m assuming no and that’s why Vancouver is dealing him.
I don’t think Miller is an option

I think Klingberg fills a big need here with the PP and offense from the blue line.
I think that's a worthwhile UFA investment as long as the AAV isn't outrageous.

Who of note is a UFA in 2023?
That could be the time to go big game hunting.
Let this season go how it'll go, and if you bomb, its in an elite talent draft.

Klingberg makes more sense. Flames are short assets so can’t afford to be trading for players unless it’s a hockey deal.
Sign Klingberg though I’d be ok to make a deal involving Andersson or Hanifin to get a forward

Shouldn’t assume. Blaster thinks it’s because the Canucks aren’t willing to commit 8 years. Not the other way around.
