Not nearly as much as he would this offseason. It would probably cost him $15M+ over the term.

I don’t know. Not too often you get a 25 yrs old FA that put up 100 pt
His bad season would be blamed on the Flames.
The teams that want him would think they have great players to turn him around
There will be a bidding war for him. More than Johnny.

Very high stakes poker for the offering team, but compensation would only be a 1st + 2nd + 3rd.

I doubt that Tkachuk takes a 600K paycut and does not get to leave Calgary for sure. Better to sign his QO.

His good season would be credited to his linemates, and his ‘bad’ season would be considered his normal baseline.

Difference between Kotkaniemi and Tkachuk is that Carolina still had control after because he was still RFA.
If a team tried to do the "handshake deal" with Tkachuk, he could still renege on the handshake and go UFA. So the team could pay offer sheet compensation and not have Tkachuk long term.
On another note, if Tkachuk is considering long term offer sheets, that means he is okay with staying in Calgary long term because he is willing to accept that Calgary might match.

CGY would be insane to match a 1 yr offer sheet. It would definitely be a bit of a gamble on MT's part, but I don't think there is any chance it happens, anyways.

If Tkachuk won't put pen to paper on Jan. 1 they could still trade him before TDL and recoup assets. Injury would be the big risk for all sides, but injury risk exists everywhere anyways.

No, his bad season would be chalked up to not having Gaudreau propping his numbers up. You think GM's want to overpay for a player? He would definitely lose money.

I just wanted to put the actual numbers for the qualifying offers here, because there seems to be some misconception.
Kylington, Phillips, Pospisil, Ruzicka, Tuulola - $787.5k, two way
Mangiapane - $2.45M, one way
Tkachuk - $9M, one way

Yes GMs overpay for UFA. And Tkachuk will be a juicy one no matter what
The Flames better lock him down now or he is gone

Tkachuk getting offer sheeted would be the dream scenario. It would need to be a very high number for the Flames not to match it, in which case the returns would be absurd. The rules make anyone who wants to poach a high-end player really, really pay for it.

We’ll except if a Carolina or top 5 team did it.
3 late firsts would be absolute crap to get for a Tkachuk.

Thanks for this but why wouldn’t they give Mangiapane and Kylington an increase if they intended to re-sign them when they’re giving Tkachuk a 2m increase from his current salary. I get he’s a big star player and everything but seems odd they won’t give Mangiapane any increase at all from his current AAV. What if another team does offer sheet him. It makes me believe that the Flames have a set price in mind for Mangiapane and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get moved.

Is there a top 5 team with the cap space to make an offer in that range?

It's based on actual salary in the final year of their expiring deal, not AAV.

I think Tkachuk would sign one if a team offered the amount he wants. As soon as he signs it, it doesn't matter what the Flames do, he's already made the money.
Brady didn't care about re-signing with Ottawa, and that was before they started putting together a decent team and their arena deal looked optimistic.

So how is that extra 2m not part of the cap then or are bonuses excluded?
