I have no clue, very dumb trade by the Rangers. They could have had Fox for free.

I think it was for them to avoid having to wait another year to get him. If Carolina kept his rights, I don't think he would have become a UFA for another year. I could be wrong about that though.

They should have trained their scouts to have better conversations with the kids they talk to and make sure they have kids with an interest in playing here. Sutter did it but went maybe a bit too far in drafting only certain types of players. This is a team that can't afford to become a feeder to the American franchises. Hey, by all means, continue to pick players that have no interest in playing for the Calgary Flames. It's certain to work to our advantage at some point. It's a bold strategy Cotton.
Dense? Have to be an ass, don't you? You just never change.

Tim Erixon turned into two second round picks, one of which was likely a better player than Erixon.

So yeah once again draft the better player.

No one is suggesting you seek out players that don't want to play in Calgary. But if you truly believe a guy that might not want to player here is a better player than the next guy up you take the better player EVERY DAMN TIME.

It's whatever the gap between the the player and the next one up on the team's ranking.

But if you like your scouting group, you want them to take the player they like the most every time.

If you don't like your scouting staff you're pooched anyway; they may as well buy the Hockey News.

There's definetly value in having a guy in your system sooner, but really one year wouldn't have changed much as far as his development goes

Yes it does . Having Adam Fox 1 year is worth those picks.

Also who would know what happened in a year. Maybe he changes his mind like Johnny did

Was there any kind of team support for the young guys starting with the Flames? Robatille billeting with Dionne comes to mind.

Iginla sort of lead Kobasew and Ferrence in off season training.

Did anyone think to involve her with Calgary's Childrens Hospital? Board of directors, Fundraising?

Gaudreau's only cogent reason that he said he jumped to Columbus was the great bunch of guys that liked playing there.

Who were Gaudreau's buddies on the Flames? Monahan is supposed to be a close friend? Was Gaudreau comfortable with the Flames playing Monahan hurt?

It would be interesting how Gio saw the Flames organization after being Captain of the Kraken. He sure was not coming back to Calgary when he had a chance. Did he (and his family) have a better personal experience with the Kraken and then the Leafs? would that have gotten back to Gaudreau?

I think the American sports have more of a wine and dine their players mentality. Huge University recruitment culture ( and even High school) based on no salaries gets them to have strategies that make a player want to be there without beyond the money.

I would think that the Flames would have had someone (Conroy?) assign to Gaudreau to make sure he wanted to come back to Calgary and if there was something that didn't quite work for him that the Flames would address it.

The owners of the Blue Jackets John P. McConnell is CEO and Chairman of board of Worthington Industries that is a Steel Company that is in the 100 best companies to work for that has highly recognized employee-based policies.

His dad was a major philanthropist that was the founder of the Blue Jackets.
I'm not quite I agree with this take. I get where you're coming from, but even Burke said when he was here, that philanthropy and community were central pillars to being a Flame, recognized or not.

Many don't need the spotlight or the pat on the back when giving back.

If Adam Fox married Meghan Fox, would they have to do a DNA test first?

Would they get a discount on their marriage paperwork for saving money on name changing?

We already see this sort of risk factored into evaluations of Russians. It sucks, but Canadian teams might need to start doing the same calculation with American players.
To me this is the way to handle. It is a risk and should be considered relative to the incremental upside of that player over who you would take instead.
But as you get into the mid and later rounds the risk is managed already by virtue of the fact the player already has an extremely low probability of being an NHLer and even lower to be a star. So in those rounds - I would factor it in a lot less.

But in the first if you have two guys that are pretty close to a coin flip, it can be a tie breaker for sure.

That depends on the client.

You are assuming that Gross didn't do his job based on the fact that Gaudreau flaked. I look at the same facts and come to the conclusion that Gaudreau was being a flake.

Plus players are 18yrs old when drafted, a lot changes, so BPA always.

Gaudreau meets a Western Canadian girl that he likes and it's a different outcome to the story.

An outcome that the Flames should be looking at is encouraging their young players to hang out, and do things in western Canada in the off season. Training facilities, strength coaches, skills coaches, etc in the Okanagan with cabin setups etc. Basically a center for hockey excellence. Build ties to west for these young players.

Was just chatting with a pal of mine who retired from the NHL in 2009.

He blames much of this on Covid, the current gong show that is travel to the US and back, and the risk that the Canadian government will re-impose travel restrictions in the event of a Covid resurgence.

He would have preferred that JG say this publicly and that it’s a huge issue for families in his situation.

For one thing, we have very few facts…just one outcome and lots of rumours.

An agent’s job is almost entirely to help navigate these tough situations. Johnnys job is to score goals. I don’t think it’s crazy to question how well the professional negotiator/navigator handled this.

Gaudreau was a win because he was picked at a point where a team is just happy if they get a full time NHL player out of it. Fox was also a great pick in the 3rd round because he was worth two 2nd round picks that the Hurricanes got for him. However if we are talking 1st round and it's between a Canadian and US born player taking the college route if they are very close I think you have to go with the Canadian player.

I'm sure this played a role in Johnny's decision especially for his wife's family. Bad timing for sure with COVID but it is what it is.
