This logic is flawed.
Teams acquire these players to win the cup.
But only 1 team can win a cup.
Therefore rentals always look bad - except for the team that wins it.
The Avs made some great deadline acquisitions. Most cup winning teams add a piece or two at the deadline that contribute.

And they are exactly this kind of acquisition. Middle pairing D or lower, middle six forwards.

Janrock at 2.1M x 4 is the 5th highest paid forward on the Leafs.
It is interesting what the 2020-21 covid season worked out for some teams.
Nashville had an awful season. They exposed Duchense and Johanssen to the Krakens who instead took the Preds highest goal scorer and #3 pts guy Janrock.
Chances are Vegas would have taken either Duchense 8x5 or Johannsen 8x4
That might had made the Krakens first season a significant bit better had either of these guys played to their 2021-22 Nashville level.
Duchesnse 43 goals 86 pts in 76 games
Johanssen 26 goals 63 pts in 79 games
Forsberg was a ho hum 32 pts in 39 games in 2020-21 and had an equivalent 2021-22 season 42 goal 82 pt season as Duchense. and got an 8.5 x 8 reward .
I would guess that the Flames and a lot of teams would be in line to trade with the predators (or Kraken) for either Duchense or Johanssen if they were made available.
12 months ago they could have gotten them with Salary retained for future considerations.
Will Duchense have another 43 goal season? Will Tkachuk have another 40 goal 100 pt season? Gaudreau?
These long term deals are important to get great players but very high risk.

Getting help for the last push with Johnny was the right move. Got Jarnkrok and in a way Toffoli was bad moves. Yeah it’s hindsight but hindsight said you were an idiot. Flames pro scouting.

The Flames won that UFA signing by not doing it.

The Avs?
I dont give a flying F what the Avs did.
This is a thread about Jarnkrok.
Here is my work! Jarnkrok was known to suck during the playoffs. Do your work.
4 goals and 19 points -13 in 75 playoff games over 8 years.
That is almost a full season of playoff hockey under his belt.
We gave up 3 picks for him for one goal in 29 games. His stats say we were lucky to even get one goal from him. Yet we got that one goal. Which aligns with his stats and previous performance in the playoffs.
We gave up a 2nd a 3rd and a 7th round pick for the guy and have nothing to show for it. We even lost the player we traded for.
That is horrible asset management. Not a player to rely on in the playoffs.
How could anyone logically think this was a good move?
Jarnkrok played exactly as expected in the playoffs. Exactly as expected.
His stats tell the story for his entire hockey career.
Please dont use the Pepsifree we agree to disagree.
We got exactly what we traded for. Gave up huge assets for no good reason.
This guy was not putting us over the edge to be a contender.
|
Jarnkrok was attractive because he could play multiple positions including center and also up and down the lineup
But they forgot he quit in the playoffs when it got tough and it usually takes him a long time to adjust
It’s funny the Leafs are falling for the same trap. They’ll complain next playoff soon enough

He was okay in the regular season, even if snakebitten.
Complete non-factor in the playoffs though. At least he managed a single goal in his final game here. Should've helped us to a win, but course we got ####ed.

Flames pro scouting in that case was identical to all the armchair GMs here. I never saw CP more eagerly call for two guys that the Flames actually did acquire.

As opposed to those who are obviously so much smarter like you (I forget your advice on who they should pick up at the time).

Yeah, I loved watching Jarnkrok play. Would have loved him at that price. I'm confident he would have produced this season in a slightly bigger role and more time to adjust.
He was mostly a bottom 6 player here. He's a great two way player and I bet in Toronto he gets top 6 looks with star forwards and excels and doesn't look back.
