The Flames didn't want the player this year. They wanted him last year… and then he had the most snakebitten months of his life.
Sometimes it happens. I winced at the price when they acquired him, but thought the player would be a decent fit. Turns out I was right on the first point but not the second, but I see why they did it at the time. Hindsight is irrelevant.

His contract is fine.
What we gave up was not.

What flawed logic, good lord.

I would’ve loved to have him back for that deal. He was great defensively, good on the face offs and tough to play against in general. I thought he might generate more offense off the wing, but that’s a moot point now.

Yeah - the guy hadn’t played Center in like 5 years and then we threw him there in the middle of a stretch drive and playoffs.
I also think he’d have been more effective offensively on the wing but thought he was pretty solid overall.
I would have taken him back on this deal in a heartbeat. A very effective player that has averaged 42 points per 82 games the last three seasons for $2.1M is a steal.
Honestly think he actually fit in here well too, just had no puck luck and the points don’t at all tell the story.

If you can't score, you can't outscore. Our bet with our picks didn't work out so I wouldn't want to double down with our cap space. Even if he lights it up with Toronto, no guarantee that it would work out the same way in Calgary.

Maybe he had no interest in signing here. Considering what the Flames thought of him to give up so much at the deadline, you’d think they’d at least entertain extending him.

I think Ruzicka brings more at less than half the price.

Bad timing. I think he figured it was something he could play through and then finally realized he couldn't but it was too late for them to put him on LTIR and use the extra space. And actually not abuse it like Vegas tried.

He was (should have been) what the Flames needed for their run. It didn't work out, but I would do that trade again.
Wanted him re-signed, as he is a solid player and will be right back to his 30 pts per year this year.
Four years is too long for him though, and I bet that was the sticking point on why he didn't sign with the Flames.

Nah, based on his records, he is a bad fit for the playoffs. It’s another case of bad scouting by Treliving.

Not necessarily more, but different. Ruzicka is nowhere near as defensively proficient. He has way more offence and puck moving.

Hard working player, really wanted to keep him.
I think he'll make a lot of haters eat krok this year.

He's not going to be playing in Toronto's top 6 either.

Guys with low contracts were valuable at the trade deadline because no one could fit anyone with a contract of more than like $3m under the cap. Jarnkrok was one of the better cheap guys so he was more valuable than in a year where teams have cap space.

Yup. And they don't need to move him necessarily as they could move someone less impactful, but I think they're still quietly looking for a hockey deal to move Nylander out. Two more years for him at just under 7.

You might think that logic is flawed. Yet teams around the league are thinking exactly that with Mathew Tkachuk.
Why give up a ransom for a soon to be ufa when you can get him for just money next year and probably cheaper too.

Why give up a 1st for Giroux only to score 3 goals in a playoff round and lose him to a team in your division for nothing

Yeah I know that is crazy.
History shows that getting players via trade at the deadline almost never works. Yet teams keep doing it. GMs keep doing this.
Pressure to win takes out logic. Normally kicking a GM in the butt.
