Seems to confirm the "insider source" report, does not specifically talk about Edwards though but said the Flames met the Gaudreau camp's offer earlier in the day and then Gaudreau's camp did a 180 and reneged on it completely.

Friedman clip came on after, corroborated that too and went as far as to say that his inner circle was mixed in some telling him to stay and Gross framing this up as the best offer he would get. All either Steinberg and Friedman could say about the reversal was that he suddenly wasn't "feeling it".

Just stunning to hear this.
Going to have to dig this up on the podcast version later but Wow.

It's emotion over logic for sure...but I can see where Gaudreau's coming from.

He's 29 years old. He's already made ~$45M in his career.

Signing with the Flyers right now might be only chance you have to live out your childhood dream of being a Flyers player while being a star, while also fulfilling your wife's preference (speculated by us) of being closer to home.

Sure you could maybe go there after your next contract, or maybe you get traded there in 3-4 seasons, but at that point you're probably on the downswing in of your career, no longer in your prime. I doubt it's the same as doing it as a "star".

You yourself talked yesterday about how succeeding in your career and achieving your goals and dreams is key to feeling fulfilled.

I think this was Johnny's ultimate dream. Maybe for him it wasn't about winning a cup, maybe it wasn't about being MVP, maybe it was about being a Philadelphia Flyer and potentially doing those things as a Philadelphia Flyer.

Maybe he needed to know for sure, with 100% certainty, that even once he was a UFA the Flyers wouldn't come to the table to make it work. And maybe that's where the disconnect with Gross was. Gross was probably telling him "Johnny this Flames offer is the best offer, the Flyers aren't going to make you a deal" and maybe Johnny just couldn't believe it.
Fair points!

He needed to be a little more intellectually honest at some point though, for his own sake. As well as honest with the Flames.

Like if thats your dream effing tell them!

Imagine making a seven year commitment to a city and organization that it's pretty clear you really know nothing about because suddenly you weren't "feeling it" in the city you were in.

That's a lot of commitment seemingly on a whim.

I mean it still is a colossal amount of money, so there's that.

He kind of looked broken yesterday already.

I bet that he can't believe that Philly didn't come to the table.

Imagine seeing, hearing, and having a fanbase clamour for you to come home for the last 8 years...that being your preferred option and likely childhood dream...and then when the time comes they don't even make an offer.

It would sting a bit for sure.

It bums me out how much this will soften the eventual blow of committing to a crap team.

And to walk away from 15 million USD because of that, just so agonizingly dumb.

Best statement was he said he liked Columbus (vs. Isles/Devils/Philly) because it's close to family but not too close. He likes them coming to more games but also giving them some separation...

Could it be that Johnny misread thr Lindblom buyout and didnt listen to his agent? Hence the change of heart on the final day.

Timing would check out, but the more likely scenario is still family related.

Johnnys lie total in the last 3 days has surpassed his point total in the entire last season. Shocking.

Similar to the feeling when your team and it's fans throw their support behind a 140lb kid to make the show, then embrace him and his family as local heroes only to have him move in the middle of the night???

What really should have happened, and I've mentioned this a few times, was the oft-scorned sign-and-trade in the rare instance where it actually makes a bit of sense.

Win/Win/Win for everyone.

Decide a year ago to go to Philly, sign an 8-year deal with Calgary who would agree to trade him to Philly for some picks or whatever.

Gives Philly time to clear some cap, Calgary gets some assets, Johnny gets his wish and Philly gets a 100 point winger.

And all it would have taken was a little cooperation.

What would a fair contract have been a year ago?

Tim actually asking some hard questions tactfully right now. Not completely a fluff piece.

"there were no bad times in Calgary"

He is going to do something special for Calgary though. Full page ad in the Sun?? lol

He is my 2nd Flame ever after Kipper, but I still can't come to like him anymore after choosing Columbus.

Tuesday evening he decided with his wife and his mom at the table. Where was his dad? did they lock him in the garage? He was a legit celebrity here.
