I’m far from a Murray Edwards fan but man, I really hope that phone call happened. If it did, good for Murray.
I’m not an Edwards fan…and I’ve been defending that this is Johnny’s choice…but if that’s how it went down and he turned down that final offer then he really messed up.
You can’t give a final ultimatum and then still not sign.
Really though who knows what’s true or not but with the body language and way both sides have talked about the situation the last 24 hours then something obviously went down .
That phone call with Gaudreau and Edwards probably did happen…but who knows how the events up to it actually played out though to get to that point.
Sure it is. A demand like that is just an offer, which when agreed to is a contract. You and I are talking about me painting your fence. You say how much? I demand $500. You say OK. That’s a contract.
I’m quite sure the CBA requires a contract be signed though, to be enforceable. But the point is that in Edwards’ world, deals are done this way all the time. And you don’t go back on them.
That makes sense.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
If that story is true there’d be at least 4 and probably a lot more people on the call. At least 2 and probably 4 people from the Flames. Gross, Gaudreau and maybe his wife. Someone from the Flames would have taken notes in case there were details to be worked out on what they would have assumed was a deal.
Agreed. Thats why Treliving was pissed also. But it is now done and I will shed no tears. I believe the team dodged a playoff bullet in a sense but would have been nice to get an asset. Shes live and learn boys.

Not sure if posted already, but after watching some of Gaudreau's pressers... Yikes. Is he this unaware of social media and news in general? Or is it that he simply doesn't care?
This is how a long-time franchise player SHOULD talk about moving on.
This organization was truly blessed to have had Iginla. What a perfect player, and what an amazing human being.

John has already been kind of aloof. This just shows the contrast between true character and leadership and…whatever the fack Gaudreau is

I thought contracts that cannot be performed within one year need to be in writing regardless.
Right, under the Statute of Frauds. So it wouldn't apply to this one (which was already toast under the CBA). No one is really arguing that there was a binding contract. I’m just saying a guy like Edwards is used to people shaking hands over a deal and getting the paperwork done in due course. And if you back out, you could be sued but more to the point, whether or not you can make out a technical legal case, it’s bad faith.

How long do you have to paint the fence?
Who supplies the Paint?
Who supplies the brushes and other supplies?
Sorry, there are too many uncertain terms to constitute a contract.
Remembering back to the Treliving presser when they announced Johnny had told them he wasn't returning and someone asked if there was any chance he might pivot back the next day during free agency, and Treliving glumly said something like "I wouldn't anticipate that happening"
Makes sense if Edwards told the scumbag off for stringing them along like that.

Yeah the story really does check out when you think about all the events of the last 24 hours.
The only thing I’d say that would probably be grey area would be how exactly did Gaudreau’s camp word the ask:
Was it “Final Counter: $10.5M for 8 years and we are staying in Calgary”
Or was it:
“It would need to be $10.5M x 8 years for Johnny to consider staying”
Because there is a big difference in how that’s worded and what that’s indicating to the Flames.
If it was the former and it seemed more like it’s a done deal if you meet this price then #### Johnny.
I think that's putting too fine a point on it.
If an agent gives the general manager a salary number and years, that means it is what they want. So if you meet it, then you're justified in expecting it to be accepted.
